I have a 06 GS1200 with 8000k. I noticed oil seeping from the timing cover (behind the alternater plastic cover) on a closer look there is bad corosion behind the silver coating of the casing at the lowest torque screw where the plastic alternater belt cover is attached. There is a plastic inspection cover with four screws and a O-ring(behind plastic alternater cover). The oil seep is not coming from this location but appears to be coming from a hole in the casing between the lowest part of this plastic cover and the lowest torque screw hole for the plastic alternater cover. This seeping has got between the silver paint finish of the casing and is causing the paint to bubble away from the lower part of this casing. (Looks like corosion at first glance) Has anybody expericenced this problem. (Question- the lower alternater pully nut is it reversed thread?)

Yeh, mines weeping from the front too Chips, has been for quite a while now, I'll get a round to it one day :augie

not noticed this myself chips and not a common post on here. i'd suggest you get your dealer to check it.

BTW pop over to the 'I'm new here' section and introduce yourself properly :thumb2

Hi,
truckloads of those frontcovers have been replaced under warranty due to corrosion which was not caused by oil but most likely due to virtually permanent present humidity stored in the foam rubber installed behind the lower part of the plastic cover.
Do a search and you'll find a lot. If you see your dealer he should without hesitation install you a new front cover due to both corrosion and leakage.

Once thats done, pull of the plast cover to be sure that the rubber foam is removed (not sure if the 08 bikes still have it), otherwise you'll see corrosion quite soon again.:nenau

When I had mine replaced the muppet in the shop managed to re-install the rubber foam even he had told me upfront that it needs to be removed. In addition he damaged the shaft seal sitting in the cover behind the belt wheel causing oil leaking out.
You can imagine that I was sort of impressed by the level of skilled workmanship.:blast

Regards
Joerg

Thanks,

Brought it back to the dealer, even though it is out of warranty they are going to replace it. I will make sure that the foam insert is removed. (does this serve any purpose besides causing corosion).:clap
