OK, so it looks like the front runner in my search for a suitable GPS is the 2720 - 'cos it can hold the whole of Europe, decent screen res, etc. etc. Importantly, it allows me to do route planning on the PC...

Now, strange though this may seem, there are situations when both myself and SWMBO will need some route assistance (though more car oriented).

Rather than shell out for a second 2720, are there other Garmin devices (e.g. the i3) that are inexpensive and can also take maps uploaded from Mapsource??? Also, is it possible to enter coordinates with these simpler devices??

Thanks

For the time being - no.

Problem is the map. You have the NT+ map with the 2720 and that map is only compatible with Quest2 for the time being. (I'm not 100% sure that this is correct for the i3)

If you had chosen a 2610 or a 276C you could have bought 60Cx or even an old GPS V and used the same map license.

That's a blow! Useful to know that there are different versions of apparently the same software...

So does that mean the only way to get the full mapping onto another device is to pay for a complete second copy?

How up to date is the C3nn series??

Thanks

I'm not sure I agree. I have an SPIII, and an i3. The i3 takes the latest (NT) mapping, but I have managed to load the (old) European maps from Mapsource without any problems. In any case, the i3 can take the new map format so the answer to your questions are;

Yes, the i3 is inexpensive
Yes, the i3 can take maps uploaded from mapsource (needs a transflash card from a mobile phone shop). But, the i3 cannot take uploaded routes, just waypoints and maps.
Yes & no;you can enter coordinates in the i3 - 8 figure postcode, normal address search but not lat/long. Of course you can do your coordinates using Mapsource then USB them across to the i3

hope this helps

Chasr, yes, thanks that helps!

What it tells me is that there is some upward and downward compatablity with the mapsource products and the equipment, although it may not necessarily be 'suported'.

I think what I'm going to have to is to seek Garmin advice!

The next challenge is to find how where to get maps for those bits of Europe that Mapsource CityNavigator "Europe" does not include - ie anything east of the old Iron Curtain... Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks
