I've just adjusted the valve clearances and when finished I was replacing the little rubber stopper on the RH crank cover which shows the timing marks, when I pushed a bit hard and it fell in!

I had a spare and have correctly replaced that - however...

Where will the little rubber bung end up?

Will it simply bounce around in the bottom of the dry clutch area and not cause grief, or will it potentially work its way into an oil-way blocking position?

Any body else been a complete prat and done this too?
What was the outcome/what are your recomendations?

Kind regards,

John.

Yes it has been done before - many times  (but not by me - yet!)

The concensus seems to be to ignore it and it won't do any harm.

No oil in that area so no oilways to block.

A good tip seems to be to put a small hole in the spare one and attach a piece of thread/string through it so that you won't do it again.

However, having done it once, you probably won't do it again anyway! ;)

Don't worry about it. Many a home mechanic (and dealer tech) have lost that thing down in the clutch housing.

The plug will settle down at the bottom and sit there. Even if you do some hard bumpy riding it is small and soft enough it will just bounce around inside.

When you eventually need to replace the clutch you will find it there when you seperate the transmission from the engine.

Thank you one and all for your kind advice.

Glad to hear that:

A. It's not serious...
B. I wasn't the first!

Cheers,
John.

YES, has been done MANY MANY times before.
BEST mod tip is to take the thingy and make two small holes in it with an awl - thread a small cable zip tie through the holes so that the tale faces toward one when fitted. Now in future you can remove it really easily by gripping it with a pair of pliers and likewise when refitting you hold it with same while seating it with a small screwdriver. Works everytime for me. :)
