Perhaps the most ironic thing is that some people have come out of the woodwork to criticise a guy who:

a) Is an all year, all weather motorcyclist.

b) Positive about BMWs and owns one and I think is a great ambassador for motorcycling.

c) Has been around the world on many, many motorcycling adventures.

I'm not criticising anyone outside of these parameters as I don't make the cut in two out of the three but hell will freeze over before I slag off a bloke who gets out there and does it.

No, Not at all. I watched it, then searched to see if it had been posted, I couldn't see it, so posted it.
Simply a GS 1250 video, that I know many will be interested in. I certainly was. I found it interesting.
I'll be honest, I really didnt see, or predict any shit from it.
But thats cool. Its UKgser after all !!!!

I agree with his comments the 1250 engine is sweet, very impressed when I rode it, and yes the guy was having a crack at a fair old trip in shite weather.

I personally enjoyed the video, all good to Bruce for trying what is a hard event that many of us will never do. As for the bike battery it could happen to anybody but it does highlight the lowering standards of quality control there seems to be at the third party site that produces them.

And the bike was borrowed from the dealer, so no expense on the rider. If I may, I would like to suggest that you view the video and do your homework prior to fire both barrels from the hip

Besides, the video demonstrates how the electronics actually contribute to protect the bike. He got several warnings prior to total darknes.
What would happen if the bike did not shut down?
If the battery cell was damaged and went "open", the generator would be able to keep the voltage up and he would be able to keep riding. If the cell shorts out and the battery drops its voltage, the generator would go full blast trying to get the voltage back up. The shorted battery would not be able store the energy, and the energy would be transferred into heat. So.. pumping 400W into a battery for a while means a potential rather hot battery, to be modest. For the consequence, use your imagination.

The bike needs the battery for a stabilizing function.
Any time a load is switched on or off the demand to the generator changes. If you suddenly lighten the load, the generator will produce a too high voltage for a very short moment. But even short spikes of over voltage may damage the electronics. In the electronics world 1ms is considered a long time.

You could build protection into each of the computers that makes them able to handle it, but the penalty would be weight and size. For all practical purpose, current technology makes it so much easier to use the battery as a stabilizing factor.

Probably, if it has the capacity. In order to cope it would probably be so physically large that you would be better of to put in two smaller batteries in parallell instead.

On the plus side nothing computer based on the whole bike and therefore it couldn't give a rats arse how much electrics is generated. Has to be said that in the main computers and fancy electrics have no place on a motorcycle.
