My chrome downpipes have got some burnt up fingerprints from where the mechanics been touching them. Now I read very positive reviews on this optiglanz cleaner, do any of you have any experiance with it on chrome?

This is the stuff I am referring to.

Regards

What can be recommended though to clean up chrome downpipes without having to spend half a day per side. wife will file for divorce on the grounds of me loving up another beauty :D
Yes, it's no good for the chrome finish on the pipes.

Haven't used it on my current bike (14 GSA TE LC with chrome downpipes) but it worked fine for my 05 GS, 06 and 10 GSAs all with chrome pipes too :-/

Removed all the brown staining and left the pipes looking fresh and new, did need to be kept on top of to avoid the brown finish returning but whether that was me being aware (and more obsessive!) or because it interacted with the chrome, I can't say. Either way, looked cracking after a decent scrub :-)

Andy

PS. Having just bought a new bottle, and having just stripped down the bike for a really good scrub, I will report back on whether it is still as effective on this bike (if I remember...).

I did try it on my pipes, but it made no difference. The instructions do not recommend it for chrome finishes either.
Alutech metal polish works, but with care as it's a little abrasive. The same company also do a dedicated chrome polish, which I am waiting to arrive. I have tried the usual autosolve etc but they don't really touch the stains.

on SS downpipes i use scotch brite pad with autosol or ferecla G3 compound to get the crap off... if they are heavily stained then microfibre with G3 to get a great finish

Thank you but mine are chrome finish not SS and as such the scotch bright pad will get them scratched.

G3?, does this really work, iv got a big tub of this in the garage, never thought to try it on the pipes over the years

Dunno about Farecla G3, but good old Solvol Autosol on Scotchbrite does the business on stainless. But DON'T do that on chromed headers - like a GS/GSA TE has. Almost two years in and I haven't touched the chromed pipes on my GS. I just wash 'em. A bit blue near the heads, but otherwise, shiny. :D

Wonder wheels is virtually the same as optiglanz and a fraction of the price.

But it contains acid and that in turn is no good on a corrosion prone GS. Am I right?

Do not use Optiglanz on chrome pipes. You can polish this out BUT you will need a drill kit with the 3 stage buff attachment and stage polishes. The roughest with appropriate polish will get of blemishes and get back to new.

The roughest buff is very course but will get rid of all stains and blemishes but will leave the area dull through scratching....the other two buffs will get back to nice and shiny.

A kit to fit your power drill is about £20 in Halfords.

Cheers
