Just being new new to the GS world I would like to know if it is alright to use an OptiMate III SP Battery Optimiser on a 1200 gs over the winter months.

It should be fine as long as you connect the lead directly to the battery terminals.
Using the power socket can cause problems as it apparently shuts down and disconnects after a while with the key out.

I thought it would be simple job like just plugging it in to the external power socket on the r1150rt. I take it I need to disconnect the battery from the bike's electrics before conncecting to the terminals?

From what I`ve read over the months, the accessory socket 'shuts down' after a while....I may be wrong so ask in the 1200 Forum.

The lead I`m talking about is the short lead which should have two ring connectors on one end and an Optimate plug on the other.

Obviously, you`ll have to undo the battery terminal bolts to attach this lead, and you may well have to disconnect the bike`s wiring in the process....on the other hand, depending on the way it`s all been done, you may be lucky and be able to attach the lead without disturbing anything else.

I wouldn`t worry about disconnecting the battery,anyway....

ISTR that if you disconnect the battery you will need to set the TPS before attempting to restart the bike . If this is not done I believe it will not start and you'd better call BMW breakdown? :nenau Perhaps the more knowledgeable will be able to answer this?

as has already been pointed out you need to fit the optimate plug to the battery but once its connected leave it connected you should be able to plug the optimate in when ever the bike is parked up for a length of time without disconnecting the battery.

I've just changed from an 1150 to a 1200 and the handbook says that if you intend to charge the battery using anything but BM's own overpriced charger you need to disconnect it.

However my Optimate seems to work through the accessory socket - providing you:

1. Switch the igniton on.

2. Plug in the Optimate and switch it on.

3. Switch the ignition off.

The hazard warning switch then illuminates, which I think is a sign that everything's going well.

However when the battery is fully charged the electronic system switches off the accessory socket and the Optimate stops working, so you can't just plug it in and leave it over long periods.
