Regarding that somewhat depleted (and IMHO misnamed) tool kit that is now supplied with the 1200... Fortunately I have a little time left before it (fails to?) arrives. Given that the vendor isn't going to suply them, what I'm after is a shopping list... especially as we are approaching Christmas...

I've searched and read the threads on both ADVrider and here, but although there are pictures of the nice earlier versions, what I need is:
a list / specification of the tools that are needed.
some recommendations for good places to get them
an explanation as to what some of the tools in the old tool kit did - I couldn't work them out!

I guess the other guide is that they must fit beneath the seat too...

I also suspect that some of you with more experience of these machines would also recommend some additional bits (e.g puncture repair kit).

Thanks

Not sure about additional tools but, the first time I tried to undo the oil filler cap with the spark plug extracter, as it says to do in the manual, to top up the oil level, the poxy thing just turned around in the hole. Obviously it had been over tightened by the dealer but, not by much. First thing I bought for the bike was a 'Wunderlich' oil filler cap.

I find it much easier to just open the oil filler cap using my hand. It only needs to be hand tight when you put it back on, so why use a tool at all?

As for puncture repair kits, I recently bought one from my local bike shop which is similar to the one that came with the GS, except that it claims permanent repairs - the BMW one says it's only a temporary repair as I remember. The kit I bought is made by Weldtite, and I know it works as I used it on another bike recently, which has done at least 1000miles since the repair.

A bike shop came with your GS?... Blimey! ;) :P

Anyhoo, I used the BMW puncture repair kit to repair my rear tyre temporarily; I'm not going move the plug over to the next tyre I buy... :D

Chisurz wouldn't it be easier to meet up with any of us that are from around your area. There's me, Paul Wakefield, and a few others who are not far away from Oxford... We can show you our tools  ;)
... Unfortunately I'm very pressed for time ATM :(

Yes, must be the lack of  that making the little grey ones out to play... I think we should have a round of virtual Friday

Thanks everyone.

Meeting up to understand the bits is a good idea. This side of Christmas is a non-starter for me too. Come the new year, then a good option is the South Oxfordshire / Reading regular meet. Haven't been to one of these yet, but I'm told they are the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Pack Saddle (on the A4074 just north of Reading).

The bad news is that I was hoping to put together a shopping list for Christmas! The good news is that I won't have a problem with the tool kit until March '05... Meanwhile, the trusty 650GS will have to see us through the winter...

So, come January / February I'll revisit the thread to encourage your help. Cheers.
