I have an SD card with OSM maps that was used with a Montana 610, that device no longer operates. I am now using an XT, unfortunately, the SD card is not recognised by that device. I can view the maps on the computer, confirming the information is still on the card. Any suggestions as to how the card may be read and used by the XT please?

I have both the XT & an old Montana 600, the Ordnance Survey maps that came with the 600 will not run on the XT. If you need off road maps you can either use the pre-loaded 'Topo' maps on the XT, or you can download & run Open Street Maps (OSM). I am assuming that you are referring to Ordnance Survey Maps when you state 'OSM'.

A point to note, make sure you do not have the OSM maps enabled when you use other Garmin maps, as you will lose the spoken navigation directions.

I am referring to Open Source Maps not Ordnance Survey. I do not understand why the XT does not recognise those marks that worked perfectly with the Montana.

does it need to be formatted so the device can write the root directory..?

What is the format of the map file?

I regularly use OSM maps on my XT without issue.

er-minio can you please inform me as to where do you download the OSM files you have used as I may start from scratch again. Thanks.

The XT will run Open street Maps, The old Montana ran NT maps & the XT runs NTU maps, but I believe that only affects the text on the map. I would try a fresh download of the OSM map on a freshly formatted card. You may want to check, but I believe the card on an XT needs to be formatted to FAT 32.

I am not sure what advantage you will get on an XT by running an OSM map. Garmin describe the 'Topo' map on the XT as being generated from Open Street Map data.

I purchased the one I currently use (for off road use). But I tested OpenMap Chest maps and they worked: https://www.openmapchest.org/

Are you uploading the images into the XT as an .iso file?

Openmapchest.org is up and running to download maps as is https://alternativaslibres.org/ These maps are pre-converted from OSM to Garmin Format.

His instruction book on Amazon is much easier to follow than the Mkgmap Wiki and is worth the £2.14 to download the ebook. I've recently made my own maps for garmin for Canada and New Zealand. Using Mkgmap and Splitter from the Windows command prompt.

Anyone who started computing using MsDos will have no bother with it.
