OUCH! Had to be recovered today

Out for a ride today with friends in the Hexham/Alston area when I noticed a slight grinding noise from the back end. I was not too concerned at first and thought it could not be the bearings as these were changed by a BMW mechanic at 36k (less than 10k ago). We took off the brake caliper to rule out the possibility of sticking pads etc and the noise was still there. No side play, so decided to carry on towards home.

By the time we reached Shap I thought the noise was getting worse, or was it my imagination? Pulled over to the side of the road to see oil pouring out of the final drive.

Without stripping the drive down I think that the large wheel bearing that has collapsed taking the oil seal with it. I hope there is no other damage!

I do not think it is unreasonable to expect this bearing to last more than
>10k. The previous one lasted 36k and I was disappointed with that! At the moment I am thinking that either a fault bearing was installed or the mechanic made an error. I will contact him asap to discuss the problem.

Any observations from the 'fountain of knowledge' out there?

Would this "gloating" be because they've no need to repair their final drives.

They just have to throw them away and buy a complete new unit.

You've just misunderstood the difference between being able to effect a roadside repair (if the 1100/1150 owner so chooses) and waiting for a recovery truck/pushing the bike into a ditch (for the 1200 owner).

Read my previous post a few years back re final drive bearings. One genuine set fitted by a bmw trained senior technician (at 21,000) managed less than a thousand miles to Austria and then collapsed. The replacements fitted by an Austrian BMW main dealer and fully shimmed lasted the 800 miles to get me home and then also collapsed.
The cure was a new final drive (off e bay from Conquest trikes) which cost £60 less than the repairs.
Apparently if you look at the Guzzi websites their models using the same arrangement and main bearing collapse as well.

I didn't intend to re-open an 1150v1200 thread. I've had 2 1200s, a standard and an adventure and did about 8k on each of them. But I always kept the 1150 and found that I preferred it to the 12. So the 12s were sold on.

As a footnote, this is the only time the 1150 has let me down/had to be recovered and it possibly the result of poor fitting of a replacement bearing. Both my 12s in my short ownership had to be returned to the dealer for warranty issues AND let me down at the side of the road and had to be recovered!
