Overloon War Museum

Anyone passing through Holland or visiting Arnhem may like to consider visiting the Dutch National War Museum at Overloon half way between Nijmegen and Venlo.

It's built on the site of the largest tank battle to take place in Holland and is well worth a visit. Loads of vehicles, interactive displays and kit spread out over a massive site.

If going, make sure to visit the section covering the impact of the war from the Dutch perspective. Makes you realise that occupation isn't just black and white in terms of who to fight. At the end used to be a small scrap of what looked like paper with a number on it encased in perspex. It's a tattoo from the arm of a concentration camp survivor who left it in his will as a reminder.

I went in 1993 and I can still remember the effect it had on me.

I was on a bike with German plates and when I was ready to leave I remember thinking that if someone had kicked my bike over (which hadn't happened!) I would perfectly understand.
