I think I have decided to de-Tango my R80GS starting with the tank. Is there a paint code on the bike somewhere and a way to translate the code into the name of a colour please? I have this faint recollection of someone mentioning Marakesh Red.....

Paint code on my 1100GS is a sticker on top of the airfilter housing. Whip the front saddle off and you should find it under there somewhere.

on your model it should be under the seat on the rear mudguard---post up the number and i'll get back with a colour.

:)

Hi guys - thanks for the advice - not done too well though - had a very thorough examination of the mudguard but no sign of any number - would it have been stamped or painted on? I have a suspiscion that some respraying has been done and that may have covered the number.

Accoring to Phil Hawksley's amazing reference site, as a R80GS first registered Oct 89, the bike can only have been Marakesch Red. However the Marakesh Red bikes seem to have all black seats wheraes mine is two tone - orangish at the tank end and black at the rear.

Looking again at the Paint Code pages there is an official BMW orange colour Orlando Orange (code 394) that applied to the R80GS but no dates or whatever.

Anyone any ideas please?

Don't recall an orange bike in the 89 line up of uk bikes. Ref paint code - most of the paints are manufactured by glasurit or lechler, shouldn't be a problem to get. Do bear in mind that there are two types of marakesch red available, so if you have got your original paint code get it crossed referenced with your dealer because the paint code on the bike is different to the paint code from the manufacturer. This can be identified from the parts cd.

I got the following reply to my query from Phil Hawkesley - I am beginning to accept that it should be a black frame and Marrakesh Red... Just wish I could find that paint code!

HI Brian,

I’m afraid I can’t be much help – have no details on the Orlando Orange other than that they were made. The BMW Parts CD doesn’t list them and I’ve never seen one – I’d guess they would have been US market only.

A GS of that age would have had a black frame regardless and could have been produced in Scheme Code 640 Avus Black, 641 Marrakesh Red or 642 Alpine white. The 640 is what is known as the ‘Bumble Bee’ – black with bright yellow stickers of varying designs and the front half of the seat would have been bright yellow – if yours is orangish, it’s likely either faded or someone’s had a go at re-colouring it.

Best I can do, hope it’s some help,

Phil
