Painted systemcases?

Hey guys,

my new blue/white GS should arrive anyday now.
amongst many extra's, it comes with the BMW topcase and side cases (big lids). Now I was wondering if anybody had those painted (the lids)?
I've seen the pictures of Dutchman's RT who has painted lids and I think they look fabulous. But until now I've never seen a GS with painted lids. If I were to paint them I would go for the Pacific blue.
I know it would make them more vulnerable to scratches, where the std black finish doesn't show scratches that much and can be easily cleaned.
But boy, wouldn't it look great? So if anybody has pics of painted systemcases I would love to see them (before I spend a load of cash to get them painted).

The standard black damages very easily as I know when I caught the left hand side on a post in a car park, so, this is what you do.

1. Drill out the pop rivets holding the lids on and then order some 4mm x 25 mm stainless steel hex allen bolts and nylock nuts and washers from Stig Fasteners http://www.a2-stainless.com/

2. Fill any damage with Plastic Padding Elastic, this is made specifically for ABS plastic and rub down with 600 grade WET wet & dry, if not damaged them just rub down to give the paint a key.

3. Decide on the colour and have the paint mixed at any auto paint suppliers, they can match any colour just tell them the specific colour you want e.g. I did mine in Marakesh Red, then spray the lids and finish with clear laquer after, or take to a paint sprayer who will do all this for you.
I did my own and the paint cost £4.60.

4. Rebolt the finished lids on the panniers.

Use a hair dryer or heat gun on low to get the badges off, warm them up with the nozzle a foot away and gently lever them off, they stick back on in the same way, warm them gently and press back into position.

I did mine on an R1100RT, I bought the paint from RS paints.
But you need a primer filler paint for plastic, and also a 2 part paint & hardener for plastic, the idea is the paint is flexible, so when the plastic flexes and expands and contracts with the weather
the paint won't crack and when you put the laquer on with enough coats (i put 6 on) it gives that really deep shine. I then bought the bump kit for them to finish it of.
I have some photo's somewhere.

I'm going to paint the ones for my GS as I bought them 2nd hand
and they have been well used ( if you know what I mean).

thanks for the reply guys. Since I'm not that handy I'll see what my dealer charges for the painting of 3 cases. But I'm pleased to see that it has already been done and it is possible.

In the meantime, if someone could post some images of his painted cases on a GS it would be great so I can see what the effect is.

From any bmw dealer, I forgot how much, but they work!!!. and look good especially against the paint job, I'll try and dig out the photos

I see you even painted the rubber protections strips. Makes a nice bike. Maybe yellow IS faster after all ?

Good Choice

Glad someone approves (other than me and The Bird). Best bit about the setup (now that the original lightbar [aka bit of wood] has gone) is the topbox - Givi E52 is EXCELLENT -even if it does encourage "Bird" to take too many pairs of shoes. We went up to Edinburgh for ONE weekend and she still insisted on taking THREE different pairs.

Yellow does have a significant impact when trying to filter though traffic. In combination with the flourescent jacket i/we wear, cars literally dive out of the way. Makes for a great rate of progress on any roads - especially motorways.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem as quick as some. Can't get it past an indicated 120mph in 6th ('E'). Not that i can afford the fuel consumption up that end, but it would be nice to know it was there if i needed it (on a test track obviously).

I know the feeling: alot of cardrivers confuse my blue-white GS, with some police affiliated-bike so they sweep very quick to the right. But my tinted visor on my racey SHOEI -helmet gives it away But hey, then they've already gone right and ...VROOOAAAM... I'm passed them

jpisace, just to let you know Yellow was in second place on my list, just after Blue-white. I really like the colour, it makes the GS really special, also reminds me in some strange way of sunny weather and vast deserts...and that can't be bad
