Hiya all, picked me up a new genuine 49 litre top box today for me rt, got it booked in next week to be colour coded:D, I was planning on stripping the lid off the box and just dropping that off with the body shop, me question is, how much of the lid are you able to strip down for paint???, I can see the backrest is screwed on, the bmw badge looks as if its stuck on with double sided etc. so no probs there:thumby:, the hinges look as if I can unscrew them from the base of the box, but cant see how to actually remove the hinge from the lid itself, same with the black plastic inner part to the lid, are you able to actually remove this from the lid, leaving just the actual lid as a bare shell, if that makes sense??

any help appreciated:thumb2

Had mine painted to match a couple of years back, it does look far nicer. Back rest comes off with the screws no problem but it looks like my painter masked around the hinges, he's done a cracking job though, you'd never know, and he stuck the BMW badge back on, it's never moved since.

Had mine done at a place in Bromsgrove. Just delivered the box and they did a brilliant job. I would leave it with them.

Before going to the trouble of dismantling the Top Case and possibly causing damage I would stop and think. Are you really sure that you want to go ahead. The standard Silver colour does blend in well with most of the Bike colours. My first RT was Biarritz Blue and like you I very nearly had my new Top Case painted to match. Then I realised that the Silver Top Case lid was a very good match for my bike's footrest hangers, wheels and lower fairing panels so I left it as it was. Also I only used the Top Case half a dozen times a year. More recently I changed my Blue RT for a Twin Cam in the duo colour Light Magnesium scheme. My Top Case swopped straight over and the Silver still looks good on the newer bike. If I had gone ahead and painted it Blue it would have been back to square one and either a new Case of another trip to the painters. Eventually you "will" want to sell your Top Case and it will be much easier to shift in the standard silver colour. Think about it.

Had mine done this summer unscrewed the back rest and the hinges from the base, left the top with the painter he taped round the the hinges and the lip on the inside of the top were it meets the inner skin which he recommends you don't try and remove, he took the badge off and replaced when painted great job.

I'm with Ourgee on this one. I thought about getting mine down the grey of the rest of the bike but it's a nice contrast to the pedals, wheels and other silver bits.

ok, cheers for your replies lads:thumby:, I was surprised if im honest to hear peoples thoughts about staying with the original colour, I can see what your saying, but not for me im afraid, think it looks wrong if im honest, looks so much nicer colour coded:D, as for the inner skin etc., I had a feelin it would be a bad idea to try and separate the two halves,as has been said,im using an excellent body shop, so ill just take the badge off, an leave the rest to them:thumby:
