Having just returned from a week touring Scotland, which was fantastic, the only problem I found was that the oe panniers on my 1150 GS were a bit small for the wifes kit! I am contemplating changing them for Zega or similar but I cant find the capacities of the oe to compare. Anyone have any ideas

One thing to try (thats if you have access to a vacuum cleaner whilst you are away) is those vacuum bags you can buy to store pillows, duvets and clothes etc. Got ours from John Lewis's.

I can get 3 times as much in my system panniers, plus you can sort-of mould the shrunk bag around the lumps and bumps.

If we pack sensibly the system panniers plus a top box is more than enough for a week away, 2 weeks we can just about manage.

This of course assumes that you are packing clothes- if it is make-up and other associated female bits and bobs then this may not help. I also understand that vacuum cleaners are difficult to find on campsites.

My girlfriend had the same prob. with the OEMs - I went for Metal Mules and am pretty happy once I got the mounting brackets sorted. 45L each side plus useful tie-hooks make for virtually unlimited loading capacity - she's not in the foto as she was away looking for more clothes to buy when i took this shot. :eek

Have you thought about Global lids for the originals ,increase of capacity of @8 litres per side at minimum expense.(especially as you can usually pick them up s/hand from E *** for the £80 mark.
There's a couple of threads about them.

That is correct sir. I also think they're a bit outrageously small for 2-upping. Not just the size, but the wierdo "aerodynamic" shape and side-opening that makes it hard to use the maximum room out of them, so they're smaller than this in the practice indeed.

Most of aluminium panniers available are between 30 to 45 litres per pannier.

Whichever make you end with, simply the upper loadable (alu)boxes are the best, you can just force the things inside by pushing them with your own gravity, 30 litre alupannier fits some 35L of stuff easily :D .

No panniers are big enough .......................if you have a wife

They are, it is just how you do it, with standard alluminium BM panniers I point to the left hand pannier (yes exhaust side) and say "If it wont fit in there it stays at home" She has done a 17 day trip like this, but only once....

Cheers, thats what I thought, small! All I need now is touratech to send me a catalogue and to win the lottery! but the serious browsing has begun to sort out the replacements. :helmet

HI,
just a thought incase you hadn't heard of these. COntact CAveman (on here) and go for EIBC. :clap ..can't remember where you are - but he is GREAT! 35L and 45L available......around £400 but they are sometimes available second hand on here. With roll-up vacuum bags and these --- you can fit a multitude of sins!!

You are in Bristol? He is South of London........not sure where now as we got ours ages ago.......but give him a bell! NIce bloke! VERY accomodating!
