Pannier key barrel removal - R1100S

I want to remove the barrels from a pair of panniers that came with my bike so I can sell them unlocked and ready to be re-keyed by the new owner.

What's that trick on these old system panniers from 1995 vintage?

I've searched and found various threads about re-keying barrels, but I just want them out. The "insert bent paper clip" isn't working for me. Yet!

Case numbers are 4654-2316007/8

Stick the key in and unlock, leave the key in.

With both handles in the open position if you look you will see a u shaped plastic hole near the base of the lock barrel viewed from outside where the close handle normally covers.

The locking tab sits very tight to the bend in the U. You have to go in at right angles, any angle downwards and you will miss the tab.

Gentle pressure on the tab at the same time as a light pull on the key, and it should pop out. If not, you may need to apply some lubrication to free things up a bit.

You might be better off if you put a 90 degree bend in you paper clip about 20mm from the end.

I had the same problem with 1 of my 1100S panniers.

I used a thicker paper clip and it eventually came out - stick with it!

Thank you gentlemen. Finally got the little bastids out. Was more knack than brute force, as you probably know. The first one popped out reasonably quickly, but getting the second one out was pretty frustrating. Not being able to see anything required me to visit the sin bin for 5 minutes. I think I was over doing things and my pin was preventing the lock releasing. All well now and the barrels are bagged and tagged separately
