Anyone know is it possible to get any other make of panniers, other than the ugly BM ones, that fit on the standard BM pannier rails?

I failed in my quest for a different option, but can add that the BMW ones slide very well down the road and still work.

My daily commute is part motorway, part heavy city traffic - do you think one side pannier would slow me down much?

just use the top box if you can get away with it :)

I got my bike last week and B£W are still to deliver the L pannier. So I ended up going to Oxford with just the R one and the top box. Seemed fine to me although I wasn't thrashing the beast as I'm running in.

No real balance probs either even at slow speed. So far I'm very impressed with the panniers. Do the job very well, good design features and look good.

To answer your question: No.

So far, all of the other hard bag makers use their own proprietary bag mounts. So, you'll have to buy both mounts and bags. Hepco & Becker may have the widest variety of bag styles to choose from. Their bags are high quality too, although the mounts sometimes need a bit of tweeking to make fit.

Hi Kiddo,

I've got H&B Gobi panniers on my R1200GS and combine them with the BMW topcase.

I chose them as they're top loaders and far more convenient than side openers.

Reggie,

I have been considering these panniers. Are they tough? Plastic? Could they survive a fall as well as aluminum panniers?

Hi Ujeni,

well they made a nice mess to the fuel flap on a Saab on Saturday and you can't even see a mark on the pannier! I was filtering thru' slow moving traffic and when the driver touched his brakes the fuel flap just popped open, just as I was passing. Oh well these things happen.

I must admit I was a little worried about choosing plastic but I saw a pair that a mate of mine had that had been involved in an accident. The bike got 'T-boned' by a tosser in a VW LT van and he reckons the pannier prevented his passengers leg from being squashed! The bike was a right mess but you could still use the pannier. He's since found out that the van man wasn't insured and he's only got third party fire & theft insurance, so he's saving up for the repair bill!

Everybody
Thanks for the advice. I have a GIVI topbox which I will fit and see how I get on. I had another look at the BM boxes and maybe the're not as ugly after all.

Wow, glad your friend and passenger are ok.....horrah for the panniers! Thanx for the info.

My replacement bike arrives next week but I had a bad experience with my first R1200GS on a trip to Greece last May which involved flying panniers!!

BMW panniers are of excellent build quality. I had mine flown away from the bike due to not correct adjustement of the top mushroom bolt on the bike when I was travelling with over 140 kmh with no serious damage besides some heavy scratches on the aluminium front part. The pannier is still working perfectly. I will stick with BMW, the Germans when it comes to build things together they do it very well.

I bought some Metal Mule which arrived within a couple of weeks.
They look really good and are waterproof. You need their racks though.

They're now sat in the garage waiting for the bike due in November.
Will be testing them when I meet up with the Guys doing the Plymouth-Banjul for New Years Eve.
Then into Morroco for a week or so.
This will be a tester before RTW in May 2005
