So who makes the better panniers?. Hepco & Becker or Zega.

H&B are 10% off at the moment at Motorbins, so a pair from them is coming in at the same price as second hand sets of Zega,s on this and other sites.

I know its pays your money and takes your pick, but any thoughts.

Cheers.

On the question of who makes the better panniers it's impossible to say, one man's meat and all that.

As far as Hepco products goes I had a complete set of their expeditions on the bike and they are top quality, easy to remove and fit and come complete with all locks etc.

With Zegas you have to pay extra for keyed locks.

My money went on the H&B's, from Motobins. I'm very happy with them:thumb

Spotted these on eBay, seemingly too cheap to be any good..... are there any UKGSers that has any experience of them ?

I had a set of these and they are only made of 1mm, so you only got to sneeze on them and they will bend. They also sit very wide on the bike cos they are the same size as each other.

Got a set of Vern's now, a huge gulf in price but an even bigger one in quality.

Cheers Tom

Had a set of the H & B tin ones on my 1200GS, interferred badly with the pillions comfort and my ability to get onto the bike. Same bike with TT zega's, absolutely no problem for either of us.

So I'd try and have a go on someone elses bike with the panniers on if you go the H & B route. One other thought, you'll probably get back colse to what you pay for a 2nd hand pair of zegas if you sell them on in a couple of years. Their cost doesn't seem to be so bad then.

The Alpos panniers are a bit dearer now and look different.

PS I need some stickers for them ,wifey suggests 'sponsored by warburtons'............

I have the standard ali BMW ones which look okay but are not a patch on the Zega ones that my brother has on his Tiger. If I had my time again I would try the Zega items.

My beemer ones leaked at the first meeting with a tree yet my brother Zegas are very robust and look cool too.

The only plus point of the beemers is that they are branded and easily removed.

Ortlieb

I have the TT zegas.. leak like a sieve.
Look fancy, but the plastic locking nuts sometimes work loose. The frames loose paint and rust pretty quickly too. Alu corrosion inside marks everything you put in, so some kind form of inner bag is really a good idea.

If I was looking for rugged panniers now, I would be fitting Ortlieb Waterproof ones like these shown below.
Admitedly not quite as large as my TT's but I carry too much any how, but they don't trash the back sub frame of your bike as easily if you put your bike down with them on. And they are waterproof when shut properly. It is the reason I stock and sell them. Rigid panniers look nice, but weigh a lot and at less than half the price, the ortliebs win for me. They certain give at least another alternative to look at and more choice. There are a lot of opinions and views with panniers. Right now I am trying with each trip to pair back my gear as I always take far too much and the bike weighs a tonne when loaded.
