Will be in Venice in June 2009, I was wondering if anyone has experience of parking their bikes and travelling into Venice. There appears to be large car parks on the main land. I was also wondering how bad the traffic is around this area :thumb2

Venice in June?

All the locals will be elsewhere...it'll stink to high heaven and it'll be full of fat American's saying 'Gee' and Japanese taking photos of everything :(

It'll cost you a tenner for a coffee and if you want to sit outside and smell the sewerage, it'll be more.

It's a lovely city but not in June I'm afraid.

Best bet for parking is near the station in Mestre then hop on the train.
You can park a bike free there :thumb2

Venice in June? We rode straight past the place and went for the hills

£12 for a cup of coffee, legal robbery ... you'll get better photographs of the place in a tour guide, better memories in the small villages :augie

Sorry ... can't help you

:beerjug:

Shangalang,

Park in one of the garages on the city end of the causeway. Loads of bikes park on the left as you go in but from what I have seen you have to take anything even marginally theftable with you.

I've parked in one of the garages on the right by where all the buses congregate - Piazzale Roma.

Garage Venezia was okay and nothing was nicked or interfered with! Only got one pic from a few years back but have used it since.

There is a whole row of them there all competing for your tourist €'s!

It is fecking expensive place to visit but with a bit of common sense and by not having a coffee in Piazza San Marco you can get by quite cheap.

What Fanum said :thumb

I did exactly this in October 2007. the multi storey is across the road from the station. Best way to get around Venice is on the taxi boats. get an all day travel card and then walk the rest. Quite an amazing place. :clap

Did it in early June a couple of years ago and liked it far more than I thought I would. Not too busy either.

We parked in a car park on the right hand side at the end of the causeway. There is a little open air parking bit as you reach the end of the road, but we got moved on when we tried to leave the bikes there. Can't remember the price to park - perhaps £13 per bike, but not sure.

Left leathers etc chained to the bikes and had no probs.

I lived in Treviso (about 30kms away) for 2 yrs and visited Venice once during the whole time - that was enough.

Head for the Dolomites and dont waste time or money there

Venice in June?

All the locals live elsewhere..

:thumb2,

it a sinking museum and it will be smelly, but it is one of the places that should be seen once in a lifetime if you can and then you can tell everybody that its a sinking stinky rip off museum full of yanks and jap tourists and dont bother going...:augie

Me holidays not all doom and gloom as im travelling through the black forest, into switzerland and onto the dolomites before dropping into Venice.

Im expecting to be ripped off and for it to be smelly but Ive got it down in my must do's in life once-blast that must do list:blast

Venice

We camped just outside of Venice purchased tickets from the campsite at a very reasonable price & travelled in each day no worry about parking you can have a drink,The bus takes you straght to the station were you can purchase a day ticket for the water bus and you can get on and off where you like.As for getting ripped off its like any large city you just have to look where the locals eat if you are going to eat in St Marco Square or Realto then you pay the price the choice is yours. As for the smell we must of been luckey it was ok in August!

Venice is a must do

I agree Venice is a must see place. :thumb
Like Machu Picchu and the Pyramids.

Lin and I will be there sometime in June also.
we'll camp somewhere outside the city and use public transport to get into the place.
Walking is ok with us. We'll happily walk all day.

Can you hire your own motor boat for the day?
(Not that I'll be influenced by James Bond or Indiana Jones style of boating around the canals of course.) :augie

A jet-ski? Now there's an idea. :D

returned from Venice, would recommend it, nice people, great food and cheap (off the main tourist bits) and no smell at all.

Tried to park the bike in the Tronchetto garage but could not get in-guy kept saying no moto!. Followed the road round a bit further to the ACV boat depot, theres some shops on the opposite side of the road where lots of bikes were. The missus asked a stall owner if the bike would be okay and she replied that bikes park here all the time with no problem. Left the bike and top box with helmets inside, returned two days later and all was fine, total cost FREE!

Excellent and a good tip.

If nothing else it highlights the need not to spend too long agonising about 'secure' parking when across the water, sufficient to ruin a holiday before one starts.

Bit late I suppose but for the future camp across the lagoon at Cavallino and catch the ferry to Venice from Punto Sabbioni, the ferry trip is worth it alone ....

don't listen to the tightwads about prices .. these two beers cost 17 quid in '03 ... it's just got to be done ... once :thumb2

Totally agree, we did exactly the same. Had a bit of rain on the day, but nothing to spoil the atmosphere. Got off the ferry back at Punto Sabbioni and walked back to the camp site. By that time the sun was blazing down on us and we worked up a really good thirst for when we arrived back at the camp site:thumb. I'm actually suprised to hear tossers putting others of Adventuring for themsleves:rob
