Me again,

My father in law is a computer dinosaur and has asked me to get him set up with a Dail Up internet connection. He doesn't want Broadband and only wants to pay for what he uses (Yorkshireman!!!)

Can anyone recommend a cheap, reliable dial up service provider. I've looked around for the old start-up discs but strangley enough I can't find any

Cheers

I still keep a freeserve account (orange now) in case the broadband goes down. its a silly price to use and so slow it would put anyone off using the internet.

Dial was ok at the time but web pages are so much more complex now they take too long to load. Alos on dial up you'd have real trouble keeping windows and anti virus updated.

I completely agree with you old bean. When I was in the Falklands over Christmas I could not cope with the speed difference. However, the old man is stuck in his ways and has made his mind up - Non of that new fangled technology it's dial up for me laddy :rob

He might think he's saving money on dial-up, but when you factor in the wait for stuff/screens to download, you spend ages sitting there doing nothing. Nearly all websites are set up for broadband speeds, with all the adverts and flashy graphics etc.

Unless he's only going to use if for the odd hour on weekends when it's 1p/min, he should consider PAYG broadband. Also means he can go on whenever he wants, rather than waiting until after 6pm or weekends, like my mum used too...........

Importantly it also means he can make and receive phone calls while on-line - he won't be able to do that on dial-up. Has he thought about that - cos we all know this interweb malarky, he'll be on it more than he thinks :D

PlusNet do PAYG broadband with 1G included in the price for £9.99 a month (30p a day?), with free modem - gotta be worth a look.

Put my mum on PAYG and it's all working out great.

Thanks for the responses guy's.

He says he only wants it for the odd email etc so I'll put it to him and see what he thinks.

:agree

By all means set up a free dial-up with your existing telephone provider you may be able to get it set as a preferred number and reduce costs but do ask him to review the bills as they do mount up especially as Jon says the content of websites is much richer and resource hungry and you may find it is costing more than a start-up broadband account.

In cases where my clients insist on a dial-up I put them on plusnet, get them to monitor their usage and then have them upgrade to basic broadband with them, its seemless when you stay with the same provider.

Dial up

Have a think about PAYG mobile broadband, you can get a 3G usb dongle and if your in a 3 aera the reception and speed is pretty good, 3 were offering theirs for £40, and then PAYG could be worth a look
