Could anyone please advise me as to whether payment for fuel in Turkey by credit card is acceptable? If yes, is it the norm or only available in the larger facilities located in urban areas? Many thanks.

Worked for me! Turkeys a nice place by the way. Im supporting them to win the european cup. They are okm people generally speaking.

Turkey is very Credit Card Savvy and most places will accept them. Even if the don't, they'll know someone who is and will sort out payment that way. Can't speak for the far east of Turkey mind where things are a bit different.

Most shops will take credit card, but you can get better deals with cash obviously. Many of the bigger shops (e.g. IKEA) offer interest free credit that is sorted out through credit cards - i.e. you pay for the item and then they take the payment from your credit card each month, rather than have a seperate agreement like in the UK.

I know that's not really relevant (may soon be though with the price of petrol!), but it gives an indication of the sophistication (if that is the right word) of the credit card market here.

We're currently in Turkey and have had no problems paying with a credit card except in a couple of places where none of our UK cards have worked at all. We suspect it was their machines or clearing house but, whichever one it was, the only solution appeared to be paying by cash so I'd recommend you carry some just in case.

Not a problem.

Have lived here for 4 months now and never had a problem as long as you can remember you PIN:augie DOn't ask how I know.:D

I am grateful for the responses; they have allayed my concerns about paying for fuel in Turkey. It has taken me 26 years to actually get around to undertaking this trip, it was a major reason for me originally to begin motorcycling all those years ago!

If you make it as far as Antalya, let me know would be happy to buy you a beer and take you for a great run into the mountains.

Nick, that is a generous offer, the thought of a cold beer will act as in impetus to get to Antalya.

believe it or not, other places sell beer in Turkey :)

I'm sure if you get to Istanbul there are a couple of GSers here who can show you the sights. THere's another one in Bursa I am aware of... In fact, you could probably tick off most countries and meet a fellow UKGSer! Isn't it great?! :)
