Trying to upload my Skye photos from my Canon A430. The PC won't recognise the camera which is plugged into a USB extension port. I've tried switching the extension to a different USB port. No joy. Tried uninstalling and re-installing the Canon software. No joy.

Any ideas out there?

Thats what it sounds like, however if you have the disc it came with then who knows. Did the camera work before or is this the first time?

Assuming that you're using Windows 2000 or later, try the following.

Go to 'My Computer', right click on the icon and select 'Manage'.

Select the Device Manager and look on the right-hand side. Any malfunctioning devices will appear with little yellow exclamation mark icons. For anything that's camera or USB related, right click on the icon and select 'Uninstall'.

Once that's sorted, right-click on the computer icon at the top of the device list and select 'Scan for hardware changes'. This will begin the reinstallation process and will prompt you for disks if necessary. If the camera was working correctly before, just let Windows follow the process automatically, but if it never worked properly, tell it that you have the disk and insert it at the appropriate time. (Assuming that you have the disk!)

One other thing, if you recently plugged in a high power device like a hard drive, without external power, Windows may have detected a power surge and disabled the port, in which case it might not come back without a reboot.

Not certain about this but don't you need 'zoom browser' installed for Canon cameras, if you don't want to install it just take the card out and use a card reader.

Thanks Tobers ...

Tried that. No yellow exclamation marks! Yep. Zoom browser is installed Dickie.

Frustrating innit!

Tried a card reader?

I had problems like this in the past. So now I have a usb card reader. Makes the job so much easier, and as card reader is attached all the time I don't have to go hunting around for the usb for the camera I am using (usually manage to find every lead but the one I wanted).

Card reader also has 3 usb ports, so a handy bit of kit.

turn it off then have a cup a tea leave it all connected once tea drunk then switch back on. That teach the sulky arsed *ucker who's boss, it'll work a treat guarranteed.:augie
