Am I missing something, riding back yesterday the PD went onto reserve so I reached down to the left hand fuel tap and switched it up to reserve and the bike picked up again so I didn’t switch the other tap. 28 miles later the bike starts to slow again, now the reserve is supposed to be about 4 1/2 litres so I reached down and switched the other tap and it picked up again? I know the taps are linked so what am I missing?

The taps are linked but at low levels you have fuel sitting in the lower saddle of the tank, in effect, acting as two separate tanks. Hence the situation you discovered.
