Considering a holiday in early September, trying to decide where to go.
Transportation most likely to be a 250 trail bike.
Picos is 1 option (via Santander ferry)

Been reading lots of posts of where to go, where to stay.

I normally take camping gear if the weather is good, stay in hostels or B&Bs if not.

Someone told me it will be cold in September - beginning of winter! - is that true?

I can do rain but I don't like being cold & I'd rather go elsewhere if so

You'll be fine. September is a nice month in most of central Europe, much as it is in Yorkshire.

Like any mountains the weather can change from day to day, hour to hour, week to week, with the temperatures maybe dropping to the sharper end of 'cool' at night. Similarly, one bod can report that it was very hot the year he went, another will report that it was wet when he went and another that it was warm and sunny.

Google: 'Picos weather September', lots of sites will ping up, so you can surf through them. Many of the weather sites (like weather underground) have bucket loads of regional historical data, whilst books like 'The Rough Guide', 'Lonely Planet' and 'The Michelin Guide' all have lots of general 'weather' information. Drop into a bookshop, thumb through the pages and make your own mind up. A bit of self help is often as good (if not better) than the pages of UKGSer.

PS It can get very foggy higher up or low clouds come in. Clouds are wetter than a Haddock's bathing costume as they are composed of rain too lazy to fall to the ground. You will no doubt find that out when you ride through them or take down your tent :D They also have the additional feature of being very cold as they block the sun out, as the dinosaurs discovered. :beerjug:

Have been there in October and its been hot/sunny. Pot luck, just like our current Summer weather:)

We're going this Oct and hoping for 35c:bounce1

Been in Sept and it's been fine and also in late Oct and the snow was just starting to fall in 2008, still warm by day though

Went down through France to the Picos a couple of years ago for two weeks in the middle of September. Had one afternoon of rain while we were in the Picos (in fact that was the only rain on the whole trip).
Warm down by the coast, bit nippy up in the mountains when the mists came down but generally good weather. Some of the campsites on the way there and back had already closed down though.
The Picos is where I rediscovered the fact that I don't like edges with big drops, made me nervous 'cos I'd only passed my test the month before and was trying to get used to my new bike.

Great place though, would love to go back.

thanks - just glad the answer wasn't a definite Yes
I was in Austria 2 yrs ago & it poured with rain on many days - thankfully, not the day I went up the Stelvio!

more web research yet to be done :)

Just in case you're interested. We stayed at this campsite for a few days, while we explored the Picos. Pitched our tents overlooking the sea, under the trees. Went to sleep listening to the surf at night. Reasonable site, and did the job well enough (this was two years ago mind). A couple of really nice beaches nearby, they were quiet in September aswell.

Its a couple of kilometres west of a place call Llanes (and also a place with the unfortunate name of Poo, would you believe).

Picos in September. Its a roll of the dice, could piss down, could be 30C.

Which is about the same for most of Europe!

We visited the Pyrenees in the second week of September a few years back, getting to and from via Santander ferry, so we ran along the edge of the Pico's on our way out and back, on the way out we had the worst rain / wind I have ever experienced on a bike, on the way back it was hot and sunny.

Would you worry about a spetember bike trip in the UK :nenau If anything northern spain should be a bit better than the UK all year round.

Hope you get a good week :thumb
