I went to replace my front brake lever with an adjustable one. Took the existing one out & realised it was not a simple swop.
I then sprayed WD40 into where the plunger goes into the gaiter. (This might have been a very stupid thing to have done!!) Put the existing leaver back in the rubber gaiter & put the bolt pivot through - reasembling.

I then went for a ride, however the rear light keeps on coming on as there is too much slack on the lever. I can see that there is a micro switch which as the lever moves towards the handle bars it dissengages - due to the play of the lever its engaging the switch as I drive along.

So.... have I lost a cap or somthing that goes in the gaiter & pushes the lever out that little bit more?

We go to Poland on Tuesday so time is somewhat pressuring us, so if I need to get a part Ill have to go via Manchester BMW.
I could off course do what I did when out riding to resolve it - bit of elastic around the brake lever to the handguard - short term measure but not something I really want to do all the way to Poland.

I know spraying it with WD40 may not have been the best thing to have done.....
Your knowledge of what should be in the gatter would be usefull & if its that slack does this indicate it needs bleeding (its just come back from a service so I wouldnt have thought so, hence why I'm blaming my 'stupid activity').

Hope you can help.

Did the little pivot bush (that the bolt goes through) fall out of the lever maybe?

DPM's response

HI
No it didnt, but thanks for the thought.

I've tried it again this morning & it seems fine, so wether the oil was not pushing the piston out far enough & in which case I need to turn the wee grub screw/alan bolt in order to take up the slack?

I didnt want to meddle with it if I'd lost something.

Spoke too soon...

NO its not correct.

Does anyone know - the push rod that goes into the gaiter & connects with the hyrdolic piston, should there be a spring to push the rod out.

What retuns the handbreak lever to its original position ie away from the handal bars - just the pressure of the oil in the system or is there a spring?

I thought WD40 was bad for rubber, except perhaps nitrile. Not an expert just something I think I picked up along the way.

Parts list

If any one can lead me to a parts list I would be very grateful - I tried on several occasions to find a blown up drawing, lots for the single, seemingly non for,the GS 650 twin.
Anybody know where to search?
