Please explain how decompression lever works

as the Title says really,i just know that you do it after finding TDC but could somebody please explain what it actually does , oh and not too technical please.

the not too technical answer is that it opens the exhaust valve/s slightly therefore reducing the compression.

I'm guessing the more technical explanation is that "the exhaust valve is opened slightly to reduce compression"
