Any body know what you can use to polish out fine scratches in a visor. I have been told 'Brasso' is good. Any body know of anything else. I have bought a replacement, but the old one just has a few fine scratches in a band across my line of vision and I would like to see if it can be saved?

Brasso does work. Dunno of anything else to help. Sorry - useless as usual.

Toothpaste is quite good on perspex. Not sure if it would damage the coating on the visor.

If your visor is scratched enough to need polishing it should be REPLACED. Don't be so tight. Yes I know they're quite expensive. I find that these new anti-scratch coatings make the visor last as long as the helmet. Around 3 years mostly.

Plastic Polish

There is a product called Plastic Polish specially designed for cleaning perspex windows which will remove scratches. Which one to use???, there are various makes out there.

A couple of years back I took an 8 year old Arai to be 'serviced/checked ' in the Arai service centre in the pits at the IoM. I asked the technicians what's the truth about when to replace a helmet and why.
They talked of generally it being a good idea, and perhaps some breakdown due to UV exposure accounting for a recommended lifespan of 3/4years, and of course they sell more helmets.
BUT they also said after examining mine that it would be just as safe to use for a couple more years as the day it was made.

A few years ago I had a deep scratch on my screen on a F650.
I have access some polishing equipment (for Glass and Fibre optics) so polished it out.
I learned not to go too hard on the perspex when polishing and use tonnes of water. The perspex will overheat very easily and get "fluffy" as if you ran light sandpaper over it.

After this learning I tried it on some small scratches on my visor and it worked quite well. If they're deep scratches on the visor it'll still work but you'll get some distorsion where you've polished.

Basically all you need is a soft polishing wheel (cotton or wool) and a polishing compound (I used Cerium Oxide) and Sh*t loads of water. Keep it really wet. Any size wheel will do the job and you can get small 3/4" cylinder shaped ones very cheap (2 quid) to use in your drill. But the bigger it is, the less distorsion you'll get.

The other option is to go to a Glass/Morror provider. I've used an old one in Dublin (so auld, I tink they invented Glass) where they have a 20" diameter, 5' Wide Cotton wheel soaked is comound and water for polishing. Took about 30 seconds and becuase of the width and diameter it won't cause much distorsion. I'd just ask them to take it easy as it'll overheat.
If you can find a place like this at a quiet time, they proably won't bother charging you...
I'd like to be in the position where I could throw away 50Euro (30quid) to replace each visor I got a scratch in...

Yes Tim but it's NOT there head that's going to hurt if you fall off is it???????

As Bell's advatising puts it, "Put a $10 head in a $10 helmet"

Personally I like to keep the no-claims bonus I have on my life insurance

I heard that there is a product specific for electronic dysplay which gives great result...

...just my two cents :o

BRASSO!

Well thanks all for your ideas!
Got the replacement visor Friday - so took the old one off and got the BRASSO out [ couldn't get the liquid so had to settle for the tin with the wadding impregnated with polish - like dura glit].
The scratches are really fine from dust or fine grit on the inside of the visor
A short while later of circular polishing the area BRILLIANT!! No scratches and perfect clarity. One spare visor now - good as new!
:D

I have successfully polished the scratches out of a Fog City visor insert using Autoglym polish for plastic.
