Portugal tolls advice needed

Planning a trip through portugal for a week, mainly Lisbon and Porto.
I have read some tolls are electronic only. As much as I plan to avoid toll roads as best I can I may clip one or two so need o know what the SP is.

There are quite a few toll roads that are now the new type, I.e. no toll booths. So far for these it seems a complete shambles for vehicles not using the via verde tag system. Especially for foreign users. If it was me I would just carry on and plead ignorance IF you get stopped. Very very unlikely. But I have read the system is supposed to be for foreign users to pre pay and get a via verde electronic tag. I think they charge around €25 for the tag and then you have to 'load' it up with €25 of pre paid credit. But I haven't found out exactly where you get all this from. There are some offices at varied toll entrances/exits. Otherwise what you can do is if you find that you have been on a pay road without the tag, you can go to any post office and tell them where you used the highway and they should tell you how much to pay. They will have your reg no in the computer as it takes a picture every time you pass a pay point. (overhead gantry) of which there are many.

Thanks for the advicce.

I have all day to travel so if i can work out which roads are tolls I can plan to avoid the buggers.

if this is of any help last april 2011 we road from santander to lisbon hit 1 toll and that was for about 2 miles apart from that no toll roads

we got off boat at santander at 1 mid day and got to lisbon at 10pm that nite tes we did give it large ones but we were all on sports bikes at the time

alot of the new toll roads only started in April this year.

There are some great roads in the north. Stay off the toll roads and have much more fun.

The itinery is tight, fully loaded 2 up is not going to be the most fun as it stands, but hitting the occasssional toll to get north gives me more chances to have a laugh.. and less chance of it being an 8 hour 90 degree slog.
$20 for a 3 day unlimited pass, I think I will grab one just in case.. as I do when I get anywhere near Switzerland

If you are heading north out of Lisbon the best roads start just south of coimbra if you are going in land a bit. The toll roads are empty when you get north of the Mafra turn off on the A8. Obidos is well worth a stop off and it's right next to the A8.

I am now hatching a plan to cover half the distance on the tolls and the rest on some nice roads.. I only have the day to do it, so its kinda hobsons choice

You're welcome. If it helps any, Lisbon to porto is about 3 to 3 1/2 hours on the highway.

I don't mind a 6 hour day in the saddle.. So i can get some good roads in.. the rubber will be square enough as it is with her and the luggage so try to keep off the straight bits
