Poss reg/rec failure? F650

Excuse me being a bit vague, one of my work colleagues has a funduro,
he had problems before with the battery not charging,he then said he wants me to get him a reg/rec as the bike shop removed it??????
I`m going to give him my multimeter and explain how to test it and see from there.
I have only had basic info as we passed at work.

A common problem as they are sited under the seat with no cooling.
