Potential Purchase

Hello everyone,

I might be going to have a look at this: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/dual-purpose/bmw/listing/3946437351 at the weekend.

Can anyone give me any opinions or top tips on what to look for or questions to ask?

Many thanks,
DA

From the other side of the world opinions are like...
Is that really a 2015, as it looks to me like a 16 ie black engine and drive, keyless etc? Perhaps late 2015 build as a 2016 "model"?
Back tire and front do not match for wear so perhaps a haggle point for the cost of a new one?
Seems a bit of a high price considering mileage of c.50k (70k km) or is that a market price out there?
No mention of service history, and given the latest internet discussions about the offer from BMW of the free inspection/ possible automatic replacement for high milers of the drive shaft then I would have thought this would have been a selling point?
Also worth a question over the wire wheels saga ie either replaced FOC?
The quilted liner in the boxes makes it worth looking at, just to see if there was a market for it in the UK:aidan

Gearbox on the pre 2016 models could be very poor on some bikes and was made even worse if GSAP was fitted , plus on a number of the earlier bikes ( 2014 and early 2015 production runs) the ESA could be troublesome but it was a bit of pot luck . Some had no issues others like myself and a few other members on here had numerous issues.

Also switchgear quality on earlier bikes was on par with an average Chinese built 125 , mine had two sets of switchgear in 34 months (check everything works and the switches do not feel like they are full of sand)

I would say that it hasn't been particularly well looked after because the exhausts have been allowed to corrode. Well it does in the first picture, but looks polished up a bit in the others, maybe the dealer had the headers polished?

Because of the corroded collector box, check that the exhaust flap is rotating freely.

Also check that the switches operate freely, the rockers and push buttons have a tendency to stick.

Check for any paint bubbling around the big 'hole' in the rear drive and the joins around all the engine cases, these are the places where corrosion normally begins.

A good indicator of a bike that has been well looked after is if the hole in the rear drive is clean and shiny and the front engine cover bolts are clean and free from corrosion.
