Ok, my 2010 has some corrosion issues on the engine cover. No surprise there! My right fork lower has also blistered and is unsightly. Centre stand is getting there, bar ends are rust specked through use. I have been quoted £100 for powder coating the main stand, both fork lowers (only one fork lower needs doing but pointless to have 2 legs looking different shades of grey. :).the engine cover and the 2 bar ends

So for the money and faff of removing engine cover, am I better off doing this DIY with paint/etych in situ or taking engine cover off etc and getting the lot powder coated professionally? Is it a fair deal? No postage

£100 is a lot even at Smoke prices.

Wing and Son are near Totnes in Devon and do offer to work by parcel delivery.

Terry & Will Wing are at http://www.wingspowdercoating.co.uk

When you replace the cover use a marine grade corrosion and anti seize paste such as Loctite-34026 all the way up the bolts. I used washers under the bolt heads with the round side towards the cover. Copper washers might be even better.

The engine cover has to be dip stripped so you need a coater with a dip tank. The Wings have one.

Chris Ward at Burton on Trent is an industrial finisher so does not do any dip stripping. But he's good for steel parts and consequently his prices are lower. He did my wheels but I had to organise the chemical stripping. Its a similar paint on the engine covers.

Thanks bendy, great response. I'll pursue this in the next few weeks. I may even do it in situ if I can
Seems easier after reading around

Not got round to main stand but have done fuel filler, cockpit bars, and head light grill, all done by local company not the cheapest thing but all worth it in the end

Thinking about the engine bars next and a few other bits next winter.

Sorry to bring this up, I had a search through but can't find anything similar.

Washed my 2011 GS today, ready for the summer ahead. I'm not Anal about cleaning at all, just one good wash a year followed with ACF treatment on the GS. Then the flies etc off the screen etc. through the summer.

Got the bike a year ago, really, really chuffed with it but was a little miffed with the paint on the engine cover and around the oil glass, and near the mounts for the engine bars. But not stopped me loving the bike, I just put it down as being how it is.
However, having given it a good clean today, I have decided I will get the engine sorted and painted as it has got worse since last year.

I have seen the method to do it yourself, but I'm not inclined to give it a go.

So does anyone know of a good finisher who can do the job in the East Yorks area?

Can get the front cover done in York, Paul at the workshop will take it off and take it to a finisher near him for powder coating, but I'm guessing he wouldn't be able to sort the rest of the issues on the engine. (£120 for front cover)

Cheers folks

Guys, if I decide to do this myself (fork lower has minor damage on one only). can you recommend a supplier and or brand of paint stripper, etch primerand I guess spray can? looking for a shopping list please. Might be more enjoyable, less stressful doing it in situ. TIA

The silver paint is VERY tough. Fine until it pinholes (as paint always will) and corrosion creeps under.
Chris Ward tried his media blaster and said he would chew the metal before he got the paint off. It has to be chemical stripped and taken back for coating. Biostrip works well.
If painting use an etch primer.
Powder is a professional only job but not expensive.
