Thinking of giving the beast a face lift by painting tank, beak and wheels etc...but having trouble finding a powder coating co. in the vicinity of St Leonards/ Hastings to do the wheels...anyone know of one down this way or is it a better idea to paint the wheels?...I've been told powder coating is a tougher finish but is paint that bad?

i'd probably go with 2 pack paint, it looks better, certainly shinier.

Paint

Powder coating can be brittle if damaged at all.
Paint is also easier to clean.
If you damage your painted wheels you can touch it up .

Hi,
There used to be a company called Hastings paint and powder finishers (or something similar), who were on the Churchfields industrial estate up behind St. Leonards Motors-used them for a frame some years ago, not sure if they're still there.

Have just joined today but couldn't help reading your question/thread? New to this so I dont really know what I'm doing what with all the little pictures and so on.Anyway I have powder coating company in N.E.Lincs so maybe I can be of some use.First of all to cure powdercoating you need temps of 200c so plastics are out of the question and anyway you would only powdercoat frame and frame parts, and cast wheels. Steel tanks, side panels etc you would send to paint shop.If you are going to have anything powdercoated go to someone who does motorcycle stuff all the time because I have seen some right abortions.Hope this helps.

Would'nt consider powder coating anything apart from frame (which I'm not considering at the mo) and wheels...only considered powder coating the wheels because someone told me it was a tougher option than paint....thanks for all the input guys... :clap

I will vouch for powder coating. It is definitely tougher than paint. I had the wheels on my old VFR750FL done and gone only a couple of chips in the finish in 4 years of everyday riding. Also MUCH easier to clean.

Trouble is spoked GS wheels would have to be de-laced thgen re-laced again afterwards, which is a lot of added labour and expense. I would love to get it done but the extra hassle is putting me off.

Avaword,

I think a couple of the above threads could be mis-read, if you have spoked wheels, then really the best answer is to 2 pack paint them, but find a good sprayer as it's a fiddley job to get right, however if you have cast wheels, then powder coating is an option.

If you want the number of a guy I have used several times for cast wheel renovation give me a call. (just to contradict the above, he does a lot of classic car wire wheels which he powder coats with very good results. last time I used him, he charged me £26 per wheel, for blasting and then powder, which I thought a bargain, and they still look perfect.

Another option is to have the rims anodised and stainless steel spokes, but that gets expensive.

Thanks Jenks...

Wheels are cast and not spokes....ended up getting them 2 packed painted in satin black and the tank and beak done in matt black..(copied from Kook) I decided to leave the silver tank panels alone...I think it now looks the nuts and have had quite a few admiring glances from other GS'ers on my travels...will post some pics soon... :thumb
