Ok, I will try here:toungincheek

My son has just got a job where they do painting and powder coating.

Woud I be OK powder coating the engine front and possibly the valve covers?

The only thing I can think would be a problem is the baking process.

Any thoughts.

Davey ,,,,,, My initial Thoughts are ,
Could you not steer your Son into a healthier environment .
I have personal experience of Both Powder coating and Spraying , and both are VERY unhealthy Atmospheres to work in .

Despite the slightly condescending tone, I do agree with you.

I too have worked in very unhealthy environments: bowels of many ships full with diesel fumes, sheds full of diesel particulates, spraying of very toxic substances and all in the defence of our great realm.

I await the onset of Lung or Kidney Ca with dread:rob

What makes it worse he got the job of a guy going off to die from Lung Ca.

That said, hes twenty, a big lad and been unemployed for over a year.

The joys of capitalism!!

Anyway, about that powder coating:blagblah

Not Ment to sound condescending at all ,, apoligies if it did.
There will be other healthier Jobs , sometime .
I think its your Duty , to Steer the lad away from this , You Know
as you have said , why sentence him too ?.
I do realise , its none of my business , But Lifes Sweet.
Besta Luck .

yup, ok to coat the parts u want, i jus checkd wi my mate who does this

Never thought about the sump guard:blast

Dont think its heat resistant but using a zinc primer which is guaranteed for 25 years.

I have passed on the thoughts on his job choice but at twenty there is little other than advice we can provide.

Cheers all

Re hazardous environment.

I agree re. spraying.

Powder coating:

A local company near where I live are the largest users of powder paint in the UK.
This paint area is the cleanest environment you could hope to work in, with the most perfect air quality imaginable in an industrial environment.

If powder coating is producing a hazardous envronment, it is because of poor installation & use, not because of the fact that power is being used.

Other persons have commented; Is he using heat resistant powder?
Since the paint is cured at circa 180 deg.C, and the cure only completes on cooling, he indicates a lack of knowledge of the process.
There is no such thing as temperature resitant Powder paint.
It is all reasonably temperature resistant.

Mate of mine had his exhausts on his 350LC powdered coated,
Only the stuff on the downpipes fell off, ends of the cans were fine.

Alas Familarity and all that.
Every working environment has its dangers , properly
managed they are Miniscule , But invariably these good practices
fall by the Way side .
I only Made the Comment because this Mans son has
decided this is for him , His Father rightly so advised of the
dangers , Thats all he can reasonably do.
Either Paint or Powder , Both are equally hazourdous !.

just remember if you powder coat the front engine cover you'll need to replace the front shaft seal which can be a bit of a job, because it's a reverse flap seal . you need to heat the new seal in boiling water to make it pliable then slip it over something the same size as the shaft ,, eg a large socket. offer the socket up to the end of the shaft and slip the seal on with plenty of lube then use the tapered end of a cable tie or similar to run round the seal when it's in position to check that it's seated properly . just dont go poking around the seal with a screwdriver like i did :thumb:thumb costly mistake :D:D

Urgh !!!

Having read all the points made here, I must admit that the GS with the blue parts in the picture looks horrible.
