I intend to start de-chroming the easy bolt on/off bits of the G/S, but know little about powder coating or the like. But so that I ask the right questions (and choose the right process) if there is any advice on the following please:

What's the right colour black? Presumably theres more than one and matt, gloss, etc. Not all powder coating would be done in one hit and I would like to have it kinda matching.

Valve covers (the more modern variety). Are these best powder coated (or other - stove enamel or something) and is it possible to have the exposed aluminium finish in the fins (if that makes sense).

Same question as above for the engine front cover, currently chrome plated want it black (I think). Is powder coating the way to go?

Cheers

Easy

To dechrome have it shotblasted. As for plastic coating well there's loads of blacks to choose from. My advice would be speak to your powdercoater about heat build up. Mat and satin are better in heat and if I'm not wrong anything upto about 140degrees is ok anything hotter and the coating goes soft.

Had the rocker covers on an R80 powder coated many moons ago, the fin edges were left in exposed alloy -looked nice.

My preference is to paint high exposure bits like rocker covers, crash bars, stands etc with a good epoxy paint. That way as they show signs of wear you can redo them yourself and always keep the bike looking nice. Chipped powder coating looks bad and there is no easy touch up other than recoating.
