Power off

During an Alpine trip last week I suffered a problem with the power to my Garmin 2610 and autocom.

Both units are wired using part 158 from autocom which is a switched relay hard wired to the pos and neg on the battery and with a lead to the front aux socket. When the power is on to the aux socket then I have power and about a min after ignition switched off power, is off.

On this ride the power went off to both units many times and it was it appears, because the power to the front aux socket was closed down by the bikes systems. It happened frequently, mostly shortly after entering a tunnel, although not exclusively.

When I stopped and switched off the ignition and then back on again, the bike rebooted and the GPS and Autocomm worked fine until it happened again. Its a 1200 GS.

Could it be a fault in the Garmin when switching to dark mode ?

Any ideas ?

Have the same combination of connections of autocom and GPS on my 1200gs and for the first time since fitting in February I suffered the same problem (although only once) last Thursday.

I intend to contact my dealer this week to see what they say.

Will be watching this post with interest.

Have a search through the 1200 section - there are a coupld of thread on socket power problems, probably linked with a recent software update. I think at least one thread mentioned Autocom and how they were now connecting to battery or something until BMW sorted the software.

Before wondering about software updates etc. try a look at the easiest to trace possibilities first.

In a nutshell the most recent sw 'upgrade' to the 1200gs has introduced the feature of the intermittent shutdown of the accessory socket. For now there are no solutions, just work rounds. I also had the same problem and have fitted a circuit across the battery operated by a relay powered from the front light. Works a treat for my GPS and autocom.

Personally, I doubt it very much. That changeover from day presentation to night presentation doesn't affect power consumption of the GPSR in any way - it is no more complex than when you push one of the menu buttons, and get presented with a blue screen that has text on it.

Try searching this forum for the two words 'Autocom' and 'problem' in the same thread. There seem to be a heck of a lot of power and sound related problems encountered by people who have Autocoms fitted. I'm not trying to say bad things about the Autocom (I have never seen one, and don't even know what it is), but just about every post that has the word 'Autocom' in it will also have mention of a sound or power problem in it.

The GPSR is most likely not the cause of the problem, it is the victim of a problem that is taking place somewhere else.

Thanks for those replies - a lot to read.

I have decided to wire the GPS directly to the battery for the time being, until I get round to buying a fuse box or something similar to isolate intercom and gps from the pesky can-bus.

Hi SSI:

Don't forget to put a small in-line fuse in the wire - 2 amps is more than enough, I think 1.5 amps is the spec but I am not 100% sure of that.

The fuse is there to protect the power wire for the GPSR, not so much to protect the GPSR itself. So, try to put the fuse reasonably close to the power source (the battery).

I had a similar problem when I went to Norway last year. Dealer thought it was a Canbus related quirk.. Advice to me was :

Switch GPS off;
Ignition on;
Start bike;
Power up GPS
Ride .....

Never had a problem since!
