I've made up a canbus lead to power my Zumo 550 but have had a problem.

Out for a ride yesterday morning and had no problems at all.

After a stop at H's Cafe, Kent Motorcycles, set of for the return journey.

Zumo works correctly for a few minutes the warning "loss of external power. Do you want to continue on battery power?" displayed.

Whether the answer is yes or no makes no difference. After a few minutes the unit starts to receive external power again and runs through the start up procedure again but just as about to start operating loses external power.

The cycle then continued until the Zumo cried enough and shut down completely, requiring battery removal to start working again.:nenau

I'm pretty sure that the problem is not a bad connection in the power lead and, as the cycle is so regular, suspect that the CanBus system is detecting some kind of fault and cutting power, only to restore it about five minutes later.

Anyone else experienced this or offer a solution?

Pete

I had exactly the same problem. I got so sick of it happenine that I made a new lead up to wire it directly to the battery.

More often than not the Canbus shutting down requires a turning off of the ignition key and restarting, in order to reset the connection. Simply waiting did not bring a happy result.

As a result a software fix was brought in some time ago.

My vanilla GS had the problem at about 12000 miles. It didn't for the preceding 11,999 miles.

The reason? "Oh it's a software patch to fix the problem of some bikes flattening their batteries when the ignition is off. It makes sure all peripherals are shut down".

"But my little bike didn't have the problem. Now I have it since BuMW 'improved' the software"

"Ah. Bugger" "We'll get back to you...."

In the end they sorted it out.

If were a gambling man:

(a) Start by looking at your ever so carefully made home made lead.

(b) Ask BuMW to check your software version.
