powering a 2610 on a 1200GSA

Hi, I have got a audio socket on the garmin lead.
I thought that perhaps once you'd plugged in the battery charger the socket would stay on until 15 mins after current stopped flowing...ie it has a current sensor. Anyway I'll just connect my charger direct to the terminals if needed.
BTW nippys also do a two stage charger for canbus systems which is a lot cheaper than the bm one. Thanks everyone.

so what is the best way, wire it to the battery direct or through the headstock wire with the BMW plug.

The sat nav will only be used every other weekend for a days use

Hmmmm ....

It looks like there's 3 ways to wire it in (on both the 1200GSA and 1150GSA - see the other link). What's best is always a personal choice.

1. Direct connection to battery. Will always be powered and so suitable to keeping the GPS unit on even when parked up / refueling etc. Should probably also include a fuse box between the battery and unit - I suspect.

Pros : permanent wired connection
Cons: might be a bit fiddly wiring it up.

2. Connecting via the BMW socket.

Pros : No wiring just plug it in. It's protected by a fuse. Easy to switch back and forth.
Cons: Power only available when ignition on. Uses up a socket (no where do I wire up my heated vest etc)

3. Connect via the spare ancillary connector (used for additional sockets or BMW navigator.

Pros : Semi permanent connection that's fused. Can be switched around unplugged when not in use.
Cons: Sourcing the correct adaptor at a reasonable price!

I'm still looking to connect up via 3 .....

BMW part No 83 30 0 413 585 seems to be the connection. Will find out tomorrow how much

Have also been told that Autocom part no 1546 is good to use.
It's a red box that is wire to the battery with a fused relay inside and you use a switching wire to turn on and off, you then wire either autocom or gps to it, Wollastons recommended piggy backing onto the back of the accessory socket on the left for the switching wire

I have a sneaking suspicion that BMW may have changed the plug sockets which are located at the back of the tank. I recall seeing some pics on another site of the type of plug which used to fit them and I do not think that they are now the same.

Can anyone confirm this?#

Thanks

Nigel

I'm a bit confused here about the use of an Optimate to charge the 1200's battery. Not fitted it yet but on all my past bikes (non BMW)I just permantly fix the supplied lead direct to the battery and located the connector plug is a suitable location that I could just plug into without removing seats or panels etc. However people here talk of connecting through the accessory socket or direct to the battery with crocodile clips etc. Can I fix my standard Optimate lead as I've always done or will I somehow damage something?

Don't worry Snail, fitting the Optimate plug is exactly the same principle as using the accesory socket apart from ..... the socket!

An extra din (small) socket wired directly to the battery (fused, of course) allows the optimate to charge/tend teh battery as normal but with extra function of allowing other stuff to be connected whilst riding ie GPS, heated jacket, phone charger etc.

You pays yer money .....

:D

just buy the adapter, and plug into the cockpit? why all the verbosity?
