Powering GPS off the lighting circuit?

There is a relay in the headlight circuit which turns the light off when you start the bike. That interuption may unsettle the GPS.

The quest has a battery, so I would guess it should be ok with the Interuption. Although it could possible create a bit of a power surge was the engine is started. I'll have to dig the volt meter out and a see what happens...

I'd just rather not wire it direct to the battery, and I'd also rather keep the socket free. Although thinking about it I could just wire it to the back of the socket..

I wired my SPIII cable into the connections at the back of the auxilliary socket (1150GS). Easy to get at (remove one screw) and easy to solder to. Works a treat.

I have just wired my Quest to the speedo illumination. The spare cable fits behind the fuel/temp gauge and the cables for power and Autocom exit between the silver cockpit cover and the dash moulding without any cutting. These route to the Migsel speedo mount which is by far the best fitting option. This means that it is powered when either side or headlights are on (current draw is minimal so won't cause any problems with the illum lighting). The only problem with this is that the Quest cradle is powered when the lights are on even if the Quest is not in its holder, but I don't think this will cause a problem. ( Should this prove incorrect then I can fit a small switch underneath the clock area where I can reach it!) Wiring it this way means there is only one cable to route back to the Autocom. If you set the Quest to stay on when external power is disconnected, it will continue on its own battery when starting and stopping, without losing any data!
By the way what a fantastic bit of kit the Quest is when linked to the Autocom.

Well I fitted mine last night, At some point the bike had some sort or automatic oiler which already had a new socket integrated into the wiring on the bike under the seat. So perfect I thought I'll use that...

So I did...

I checked the voltage a polarity and it was fine..however when I plugged the quest into the cradle ever second or is said external power disconnected and would begin counting down to the auto shutdown, a second later it would decide it was fine and so on...

So my first thought was that there must be a bad connection but the volt meter showed a steady 5 volts (which is what I get from the plug-in charger), so then I thought well is has to be the conection between the Quest and the mount, so I used some bits of wire to connect the power from the cradle to the contacts on the back of the Quest so I could see that it was connected.....

Still the same problem...

In the end I gave up and wired it to the back of the accessory socket, after which it was fine...the only down side is that its now on all the time, which surprised me a bit, I would have thought that the socket would only be powered when the bike was on..

Anyway as the mount steps down the voltage from 12 to 5 I guess it should be fine.
