poxy effing pc's!!!!

This was going to be called 'now get out of that then!' ...but I did get out of it.....

OK, from the beggining.......and it's not just a rant i promise, it's going somewhere but i'm pissed off so i'll vent spleen if you don't mind!

What was the 'get out of that situation??

Well after living with a pc that reboots on shutdown evrytime (Or goes to BSOD if i enabled error logging) ...i decided as i had an hour o spare to reinstall windaz....it was due a spring clean anyway....

So off i go, reinstalled, no prob.....reloaded files and settings, no prob....then decided to set up and isolate a seperate user account for the kids 'cos they nearly found my porn the other day.....

New account, limited access, no prob...then i tried to reinstall the PCTV card....*CRASH*...have beer.

Rebooted....beep beep....Keyboard error.....press F1 to continue....

How the frikkin heck am I sposed to press F1 to continue when the frikkin KB is US???????? have beer.

*thinks*........hard reboot.....same error.....

*thinks.......bios...boot from CD*....dammit, can't do that either.....KB don't work, can't hit F2 to access bios....ARSE!!!!...have beer.

Unplugged KB..reboot..KB error...WTF!!!!!!

Now I'm bolloxed I think to meself....really really dont want to reset bios.....can i find my bios upgrade discs??? can i fukk!!!!

Unplug USB mouse...plug in serial KB....reboot.....KB error...FUKK!!!!....have beer.

Unplug, have beer....replug USB KB, reboot...Windows setup screen pops up...Have beer....carry on....

So after a few odd sound card related mislaid dlls, get into XP home......sound ok, KB ok, USB mouse ok...have beer...check forum to see if Never Listen to Stavros has bitten anymore.....remember to load SP1...reboot...NO USB MOUSE!!!

Arseholes......have beer.

Reload windows, D/L sp1 rather than use disc..have beer....

Have some dirty talk on phone with missus while reloading, have beer...try TV card again...no luck, still says its unable to load....

Arse......have beer.

Put on some very very loud zep and punk covers....have beer.....

Desktop fridge makes funny noise.....overload trips in fourth four way plug extension....shit, this is turning into a crisis,,the beer's gonna get warm and I'm gonna have to walk all the way downstairs to get a cold one if I'm not quick!!

TAke back off mini-fridge...clean out fan, squirt duck oil all over the bastard....TAKE THAT !!!!

Reset trips, fridge whirrs up...*phew...close one*...ok, back to work.....

D/L new TV card drivers, even though they were unstable last time ..try again....don't work....

OK, USB mouse yes, usb K/B yes, USB hub yes, router ok, wifi ok, XDA ok....not in bad shape then...so why the frig isnt the damn TV card working????

Frikked off now, so put on 'the great song of indifference' very very very loud...jig about in seat...realise probably too many beers......sit down again..have beer......

I'm missing something here....the TV card was working......no conflicts listed....

Sod it, really cant be bothered now..........decide to pop in again , have a rant here and go looking to wind up Stavros again.

You're probably right Alan, but I have too many hundreds of pounds invested in software, too many hundreds of hours downloading and too many odds and sods of hardware kicking around now to change......besides, each time I go through this, I learn something....often about my own stupidity but sometimes some usefull little kernal of knowledge hidden away........and to be honest, I enjoy it..I'ma bloke, I like fixing things until they're broken ..its my job

Right now I have a sneaky feeling that my problem lies in SP1.....I haven't tried that combination with tv card and reloaded usb drivers and last time..*NOTE TO SELF>>>>>>STFU!!*

Have you put all the cards back in the slots they were working in previously? Windows/BIOS gets fussy about location and use of PCI/AGP slots (cos its shite architecture and shite software). If that don't work go back to plany B, phone sex, porn and beer

Nope...in fact I haven't physically taken anything out of the box yet.....I had to leave it last night 'cos i need it each morning to sort out my jobs for the day.......the TV card i probably will have to remove and reinastall 'cos I've had ecactly that problem with it before.....more disconcerting though is that my USB mouse (pukka MS one FFS) will not work after SP1 is installed but will on vanilla windows XP home......so right now I've got a crappy serial mouse plugged in.



PS Plan B runs quite happily alongside plan A ......

funny you're mouse no longer works. does usb work with other items?

HAve just finished getting all the updates a few minutes ago.....will have to try the USB hub/other devices later...have to go and earn some pennies first

It is odd though.......last time, USB wouldn't work properly UNTIL sp1 was on....this time, its the other way around.....

Hmmm...one of the post-sp1 updates was a usb fix.....and it worked.....got the tv card working too....
