Pre-made motorcycle routes - Switzerland

Yes a good find Richard, we are off to CH in the summer, so downloaded a couple of these routes ( or rather tracks) converted them. Wow the rides /routes look impressive.
Now altering the routes to suit our needs in basecamp.

On a Mac, using BaseCamp...

Open BaseCamp

Go to Swiss website

Click on Download KMZ

Click on downloaded file

It should open automatically in BaseCamp as a Track

Either trace over the Track and make a Route, or

Right click on the Track and select Create Route from Track

Check it against the original Track and amend if and as required

Give it a name

Save

Delete (or keep) Track

Hot tips...

1. I created a folder to keep them all in, called something like Swiss Tourist Office Routes

2. I gave each individual route the same name as the name given on the website. For instance, 'Basel - Lausanne'

3. On each route I copied the website's www. address, for example: http://www.myswitzerland.com/en-gb/...s-route-descriptions/motorbike-tour-jura.html

I then clicked on the route's properties, clicked on info and pasted the www. address into Link. Clicking on that in future will bring up the Tourist Office website's page at the correct route

4. Add whatever other notes you'd like to make into the Notes section and close

5. The East to West and South to North routes I put into one folder each, so that they joined up

BaseCamp routes created (Impossible, they cry!)

Here you go, all the routes in one folder, hosted on DropBox.

When you download, make sure that the file has a .gpx extension, which sometimes gets lost in the transfer or it gets amended to .gpx.txt which means it will open as a text file, which is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. If it doesn't have simply .gpx edit it so that it has. With a Mac, I display the file in Finder and rename it there.

Note: I have NOT edited the routes. As I created them reasonably quickly from the website's tracks, using the method in the post above, the via points might be slightly out of place and / or might need converting to shaping points, according to preference. Don't moan to me if you end up going down a goat track.

That's brilliant Wapping Thanks

Have a go at:

Sorry about that, have a read through this post. http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showth...utes-(OK-some-missing)-and-most-of-the-passes its basicaly a massive gdb or gpx file with a load of pre mapped routes from all over the web, be aware its a large file 120mb plus, and will only work well in garmin basecamp, it will work in mapsource but its all but useless as its very slow. If you use basecmp its well worth the download, and as i said the very route you have been looking at is on there.

As Lee said, it is now a very big file, which Mapsource really struggles with, apparently. In BaseCamp it should work but don't expect it to be really fast to load if you are using it on a basic laptop.

Lee has kindly provided me with a load of Scandinavian routes, which I have added to my version at home. However, it is now too large for BaseCamp to be able to shift straight to Dropbox. I think I have got around this by saving the file to a memory stick from within BaseCamp (the software sees the memory stick as a 'My Garmin devices') a transfer that took some time. Now that it appears to be on the stick I can probably get it onto Dropbox. I am no IT wizard, I just push buttons and hope it works, I am sure there is an easier way.....

The file is now maybe as big as it can sensibly be, so I am hesitant to add a bunch of Croatian routes I am working part time on. Maybe it should be broken up again........???

Can the file be used to plot routes? Yes, of course it can. Is it perfect? No, of course not. What's wrong with it? Besides being very large, most of the routes have been cut out of various sources, so their actual routing may not match everyone's map versions. Similarly, some are tracks, so may well need converting to routes and / or some tidying-up. In short, it's not 'easy' to use but with a little patience it can be very useful. Use it, play with it, you can't break it.

PS If you just want Spain and Portugal, without all the rest, go to RiDE magazine's excellent Spanish section of downloadable routes.

Thanks for turning them all into GPX files. They'll come in useful one day for sure..
