I am thouroughly discusted at the price of bmw parts after heading down to silverstone to the moto gp, my rear brake pads went. Desperate to change them my mate went to bmw in Gloucster and got a set for me.
They charged him a mere £58 for the privalage and said we have given you some discount on them:censor:
Why are they so stupidly over priced when i can get the same from ebay for £12.99?????????????????????????????

BMW what a bunch of w**kers:tosser

I've always found the brake pads tend to wear out gradually, whatever bike I am riding. On that basis, I can source them when it's convenient for me, rather than having to make a desparation purchase whilst I am away from home.

Pay cheap pay twice

Check to see if they are the sintered ones that are fitted to the adventure,

I pay 45 quid ish trade for them, they last easily twice as long as the ordinary ones(which cost £25) which last longer than the likes of EBC etc.

I can do a set of EBC in 2.5k,the bmw sintered will do about 12k but they are much better when you get the heat into them.

I got 70k on my 1200 now and I ve tried a lot of differnt pads and have not found better than the standard pads so far.:thumb2

when i read posts like this i always think, what, you bought a bmw 'cos you thought the parts would be cheap? from a main dealer? doesn't seem likely does it? :blast

anyway. the £12.99 pads are very unlikely to be the "same" as OEM. i recently swapped from a 100 mile axle set of EBC HH front pads to OEM and the difference was remarkable. guess which was better :D

True for brake pads and clutch kits.. but many times 've found BMW parts to be cheaper from a dealers when compared to other sellers... no naming names. Always worth ringing up.

The outer one was as new (no siezed caliper) so im asuming that the pad had parted from the steel . Bike had bmw service under 2000 miles ago and i keep a constant check on pads filters and also oil and filter change every 3000 miles on all my bikes.
so in this case a (desparation) purchase was inevitable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mooney

You'll be making a warranty calim on the pad then.

Thats a big shiny building with lots of well paid people in it, it has to be paid for. When you are paying for the franchise then i will listen to your whinging. Whatever you say that pad was not perfect one minute and not the next, most ebay sellers don't have people available to talk bollox with you on a Sunday like Cotswold do. I think that is a top run place by decent people, if your mate is so concerned about being able to buy stuff cheap he needs to buy it in advance or when he doesnt need it.

Appologies for affending people, but some do take things a little bit to heart:goodnight

Glad we got that cleared up then :thumb2

I will just go for some decent third party stuff, SBS or Ferodo spring to mind, probably as good as OEM (if not better) and a lot cheaper.

OEM consumables tend to be cheapish (but not shite) so BMW can get them very cheap in bulk and then put a HUGE markup on them especially for those who do not have the sense to shop around.

Agreed. I always buy sintered, & my local bike parts supplier thinks I am mad because I will only take sintered! He says I am the only person he sells them to.

Myke

Think yourself lucky that you can buy aftermarket brake pads! That little tiny side stand switch is £102  Mine is fecked, so now the bike does without. :blast

That's what they refer to in the trade as a 'distressed purchase' :augie

No surprises about manufacturers mark up, those cardboard boxes with the little BMW roundel on them are very expensive to produce.

1200GS/GSA Lambda probe £140 from a main dealer, same item in an NGK/NTK package £69. Who's the mug ?? :nenau

When I need brake pads I'll probably go for Brembo items instead of BMW and ignore all that bollox about a "special pad compound only made for BMW genuine pads" etc.

The special compound is probably purest unobtainium and no doubt the pads are hand made on the inside of a virgins thigh whilst riding a unicorn.

The rear 'genuine' brake pads on my GSA lasted 14000 miles whereas the replacement EBC ones still have 4mm of visable wear left on them after 16000 :augie
