Just to add to the confusion:

Ordered the 2610 from sportextreme last night - their total was just under £560. I got a phonecall from Egg this morning asking me whether this was a genuine transaction (haven't used it for a while) - total has crept up to just over £590. This has to be due to the exchange rate the foreign suppliers are using compared the rate and charges applied by the UK banks/credit card companies.

At under £600 it is still a cracking deal!

Exactly what happened to me with my Egg card. Only the confirmation phonecall came literally ten mins before the courier knocked at my door, so not sure what they would have done had I declined the payment.

The 2.75% commission they add is pretty standard for the industry. The rest is, as you suggest, down to the FX rates the supplier uses in the ad. Best way of comparing is via the Euro price.

So you also had this interesting interaction with Egg. I received the phonecall at about 10.00 am today. Soon after that I received an email from sportextreme telling me that they had shipped the item. I had a look at their website and apparently their transaction took place at 07.10 Danish time - i.e. 6.10 here. Phoning me 4 hours after the transaction has taken place is a bit late!??

It gets better - I tried to use my Barclaycard Mastercard last night when I was ordering but the site would not accept my card. Got home this evening - message: Barclays called - please call them. Their security division asking me about an attempted transaction last night which they had blocked in an attempt to ensure no fraud was taking place. I have used both Barclaycards in Europe for large amounts (in person though) a number of times and never had a problem, so was a bit surprised at this.

I would have to check this but I am fairly certain that Barclays has never charged me 2.75% on foreign transactions - as far as I can make out they appeared to adjust the exchange rate in their favour - but not to that extent.

Doesn't really matter in the end - I am happy to have been able to order a product that a few months ago I expected to pay close to £1k for at under £600.

Can't wait to receive it now!

been comparing NAVMAN'S iCN 510 & GARMIN'S QUEST i came across somewhere there is a new STREETPILOT 2620.....i think this is why the current 2610 model is being sold off cheap.

Tiger

No the 2620 has been out for a while, it's basically the same as the 2610 but uses a 2GB microdrive, which is not recommended on a bike to be honest due to vibration, especially our flat twins :-)

Incidentaly I've just ordered mine from MNC group, great price, less exspensive than ASPID who seem to be very good. I too have been let donw by Expansys, with their never ending delivery times.

MNC group can be found here. . . .

http://www.mncgroup.co.uk/products/details/garmin-streetpilot-2610/619/

and they're doing an offer of 2610/Bike Mount with cables etc and Carry case for about £650, excellent, staff very helpfull.

Hi Sea Dog,

The link to MNC group you gave lists the OFFER price on the 2610 /bike mount and carry case at £729.99, can you get a better deal by phoning them ?

Cheers

Colin.

Hmm, no good Bakerman !
This is what it should look like: bloody clever job - fits both US and UK plugs, and you also get a european power lead too !

Hi Colin

Yes the chap/chap'ess who updates the web site hasn't ! Doh !!

The deal prices for the mount and the mount and case are the old higher prices, soon to be corrected I'm told. You willl get the lower price when you order.

On it's own the 2610 is 580 from MNC

Bakerman, that's not so good. I guess this is where you'll find out how good the ASPID after service is, here's hoping it's as good as the initial sale appears to be ..... Keep us updated pls.
