Got to buy my son a small photo printer for his Mac, can anyone recommend a good one, and are all printers compatible with Macs?

Thanks

I'm using a Cannon Pixma 4200 currently - pretty cheap and very cheerful so far as quality goes, and the ink's not a fortune either. Even just printing from Preview unmolested it's very good indeed.

I think you'll struggle to find any vaguely well-known brand that's not compatible.

One of the benefits of the Mac is that it does not need separate drivers for items like a PC, it's basically a case of plug it in and off you go.

What you may have to consider is any additional software that might come with a printer and if there is a Mac version available.

In my own case when I switched to a Mac earlier this year I just plugged my printers in and orked away as normal.

Thanks very much for the info gents, good point about the software also.

My company have just supplied me with a Canon MP160 Pixma which I use at home with a Powerbook. Works really well and has a very competent built in scanner.

Thanks mate, I'll check that one out, don't know if we have the same model this side of the pond. :thumb2

For me, I have always used HP printers with my various Macs, they are plug and play, give excellent prints, and also, if you are using Tiger, you can really see what the printer can do, rather than what windows restricts it to do.

If its A4, then go with a Deskjet 990 ( or whatever the latest model is)

But if you can fit it in, for about £ 150 (or less) get yourself a Deskjet 1220C - dont worry about the more expensive post script option unless you are into creating brochures!

The 1220C, is A4 + A3 and A3+(jumbo size paper) and will print to an excellent resolution.

Try Staples if you want a good deal, they go out of their way to beat PC world!

Hope this helps

+1 on the 1220C

I bought mine new in it's box from a bootfair for £5 form an eastern european fella. He didn't know what he had and i did. He wanted £7, I offered £5 and he took it. I practiacally ran back to my car laughing as I went.

Fantastic printer, Prints A3 photo's that you really genuinly could Frame and hang on the wall. I took some Photo's when I was in Venice in Feb and actually sold a few of the A3 prints I made, The only glitch you may have is that they don't really like really thick paper.

Thanks for all the replies and advice/recommendations, much appreciated, decision to be made.

i have 2 x canon pixma ip4300s on windows PCs which my mac prints to via a network.

they are pretty good, hence why i bought a second. relatively cheap ink too as BT says.
