Many thanks to all who replied to problem #1 - now sorted after a few days away in the east coast sunshine (not!).
Problem #2 is that the front fixing appears to fit much better when the bar flange is located between the main frame and the front stay. When the bar flange is located outside the stay, the rounded section of the stay binds badly on the bar flange.
Simon's instructions don't mention this point.
Am i doing anything badly wrong if I do as I suggest above - the alternative seems to be to grind out a notch from the bar flange. It seems to me that no amount of trying to align the bar fixing point will allow the stay and bar flanges to fit flush, there being absolutely no play to work with.
All contributions gratefully received.............hoping to get these fitted this side of summer hols............
Many thanks
