As soon as I try to defrag my 'c' drive I get an error message saying that due to inconsistencies detected in the filesystem I need to run Scandisk on it and then try defrag again. Any problems associated with running Scandisk please.

Best that you do it, or you could lose files if the hard drive decides to write info to sections that already have info on

you might find it easier to open a command window
click Run and type "CMD"
in the window type "chkdsk /f" where f means to fix errors

if you want info on switchs for chkdsk type "chkdsk /?"

you will be told the volume is in use and do you want it checked when you next restart, yes, then restart computer

open 'my computer' - right click on 'C' select 'properties' then 'tools' and put a tick in the box 'Automatically fix errors' then press start, the machine will say that it cannot check at this time but will schedule a check the next time you boot up, select 'OK' and then restart the PC, and wait while it performs the disk check, it will say (eventually) check 3 out 3 completed, but still wait (it might be as long as 3 or 4 mins) there is a 4th check it carries out that isn't mentioned in the procedure..
Then defrag.

PS do not ask it to carry out a physical check of the disk surface.

Thanks guys, very much appreciated :thumb2 I'm going in, I may be sometime!!

Did as you suggested and it carried out the check after restart, but then screen went blank and has stayed that way  Help.
