Problem entering waypoints

Something strange happened to my Mapsource v9 when I tried to add new waypoints.
When I clicked on 'show on map' button the whole map turned to a grid and the grid reference I entered changed to one that was completely unrelated
After several more attempts I realised that the rogue/default waypoint chosen by Mapsource is somewhere in the North Arctic (Poss North Pole perhaps?).
I'm using the same Mapsource program and Sat nav as usual with no changes that I know of. Also the Sat nav was not connected to the computer at the time.
Has anyone any idea what the f*** happened and if there is anything I can do to sort it out short of uninstall/reinstalling the program? Closing it out and reopening doesn't do anything to sort it.
