Before I start taking things to bits, has anyone had this problem.
GPS works ok in the car on plug in cable.
On the bike it always switches on, but shortly after, starts switching on and off.
Sometimes for seconds, sometimes minutes.
Sometimes on bumpy roads, sometimes smooth. Sometimes it goes off when accelerating hard.
Today it switched off for an hour. I thought, good, I will get home and check for power. Stopped or petrol and the bastid came on again .... and remained on as I deliberately went over every pothole I could find.
Loose connection seems the obvious fault, but it seems to do it more at the start of a journey. Its hard wired to a permanent live and Im an electrican.
Does this model have a hard drive or motion cut-out.
If it would stay off, it would be easy.

o dear

almost sure thats the one with a hard drive and therefore not suitable for bikes...:eyesdown

has it got one of those slide in connectors on the back if so check that it is not dirty cos that makes my Nav 3 play up at times hence working in one cradle and not the other.

I tried to use a 2620 on the bike which definatly had the hard drive, after about 2 mins of use the display would say "no maps found" untill you stopped for a while, it didn't switch itself off so i don't think thats the problem.....

Friend of mine had a similar problem with his 2610-it turned out to be either (alzheimers kicking in again) defective on/off switch or the connections to the switch, cant remember exactly but I can remember that he reckoned it was not difficult to get at and fix /replace.

I Think I may have found the prob.
The silly connector was being pushed very slightly squint by the cable passing over the mounting bracket.
Hopefully ... problem resolved
Thanks anyhoo:thumb2

Post holiday update

No, the connection was not the problem.

On departure, with all my planned holiday routes at the ready .... It started playing up again.
Maybe ok for 10 miles, then completely switched off, sometimes for hours.
I tried my spare plug-in lead with no better results.

So it must be vibrations.

Now ...its on the same mounting which I made for the sp3 which is attached to the instument housing, and does vibrate a bit. It has a garmin mount cunningly (I though) attached to the Touratech rubber mounted bracket.

As a last resort, I taped the thing to the handlebars ... and it worked perfectly.
At our holiday cott, I found a pair of pipe brackets, just the perfect size as the crossbar , and mounted it a bit sturdliarly sturdyly sturdierly . I mounted it in a sturdier fashion.

So ... vibration it is. I thought these things were designed to cope with off road/ deserts etc.
Its going back to garmin because of a USB socket fault anyway. I dont know if this has contributed to the thing cutting out.

My temp mounting

Den,

before sending it off, unless it's under warrenty, it maybe worth a look inside the unit, most modern electronics that are waterproof use a split in two type of case with a rubber gasket to provide the waterproofing part what this does mean it that most connections aren't hardwired to the circuit board and use pads on the main board.

If you have the unit sevurely fixed to the cross bar the high frequency vibes can eventually wear through these pads and if that happens to be the power pads you'll get erratic power out problems.

if your unit is powering off not in the normal fashion as if the screen just disappears from one edge to the next, this can indicate that the unit is loosing power by someother means than the proper on/off switch.
