I'm trying to balance the throttle bodies on my GS 12 and have done so successfully in the past using the same kit, Morgan Carbtune
The thing which puzzles me is why does the mercury come so close to the top of the gauges preventing me from running the engine at 4k RPM, the recommended figure. It can only be run about 3k to prevent the mercury leaving the plastic tubes.
The tubes are all standard with restrictors fitted.Steppers motors connected or disconnected makes no difference.
Anyone any ideas on why there is such a suck?

I haven't used them but believe I read that they have to be used up-side-down for BMW Boxer engines:confused:

Upside down
the first eight words of your post explains everything.

Harry, your mercury gauges have gone wrong, so you'll be needing to sell them to me.

I bow to your greater wisdom:bow:bow

I'm sure there was some device for TB sync that had to be used upside down though:rob

Neil, are they seriously? Hard to understand, they are that simple. Is this what you use?

mercury

No problem when I use mine even up 4k revs.

Need to be carefull on closing the throttle though as letting it snap shut causes a big vacuum and gets the mercury very close to the top.

Maybe your engine just sucks?;)

Just when I need to see it most the mercury disappears behind the plastic plate which holds the tubes in position.

that'll be the Carbtune II that replaced the mercury with stainless rods. this is best used upside down with some engines.

ps. i've just been given a virtually unused set of the old mercury gauges. it's not relevant, but i just felt the need to tell steptoe :)

Coincidentally, balanced mine at the weekend with my ancient mercury filled Morgan carbtune (from when I used to have to balance four carbs - remember them?), and I had the same issue with the mercury level. Did the job fine though :)

Yes, the job can be done but would be so much if you could rev it more freely.:thumb2

Quite, but their accuracy is undiminished with the passing of years - unlike their owner...........:rob
