problems with old routes after map update

The title says it all really - having just updated the maps on my Zumo when I load routes that were fine before rather than following the roads I now have a list of way points that on the map view screen are joined together by straight lines. Looks a little wierd and whilst not a major problem as I can follow the rough direction I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue and if so what was the fix.

I think as there's a discrepancy between the mapping version that was used in the creation of the routes and the mapping version on your Zumo it requires that the routes be recalculated, do you have auto recalculation turned off? I would expect the unit to prompt you to do so anyway?

Probably the best way to deal with this would to load the routes into Mapsource, recalculate them there and save, delete the old routes on the Zumo and then load your routes onto it again.

Also, zoom in to make sure that all waypoints are "literally" on the roads.
Otherwise your Zumo may throw in a few extra turns

It is all down to the map versions.

First check that your PC and your GPS device are running the same mapsets. If they are, fine. If not, update the mapsets so that they do.

Routes created in an ealier map version, though they will display fine on your PC may well not display quite so well on the GPS device. Why? It is because the roads have 'moved' but the waypoints or viapoints you created have not.

The simpleton GPS device cannot make the leap to route you down the 'new' roads, so it joins the points by straight lines.

How to avoid / fix.

(a) Ask the GPS device to recalculate the route, chosing the 'fastest route' option. Chances are it will simply slip what were straight lines onto the 'new' roads and all will be well.

OR

(b) Open up the route on your PC and hit 'Save as', giving it a fresh name. Then export the freshly created route to the GPS device.

Doh... Just planned an Alps tour for June/July, new Mapping is on the way from Garmin (ordered DVD rather than download, long story). Moving from 2008 to 2011 mapping, looks like I'll have to check all the via points carefully in the new mapping.

Thanks guys - sorted by copying onto P/C re-calculating, deleting original from Garmin and then sending re-calculated version back to Garmin. Have to say it seems a really arse about face way of doing things as both Garmin and P/C should have same map sets. Will be a real pain if I have to do that every time Garmin release a new mapset

Doh... Just planned an Alps tour for June/July, new Mapping is on the way from Garmin (ordered DVD rather than download, long story). Moving from 2008 to 2011 mapping, looks like I'll have to check all the via points carefully in the new mapping.

You shouldn't need to do much checking.

Simply load both the PC and your 660 with the new maps sets from the DVD.

Open your 2008 plotted routes on your PC in the latest map version. Click 'Save as' and call the refreshed route(s) something like 'Alp tour 2010'. Load that onto your 660 and all should be well.

While you are at it you could delete the old maps from your PC as you will never need them again and (once you have done the 'Saved as' trick) you could delete your old 2008 route(s), too. This will save you from either loading the wrong route or, by mistake, opening up the routes in an old mapset.

Hi Simon,

Did you download the update or get it on DVD. I took up the expensive option of getting maps for life update downloaded it updated my mapsource but I had to select NT10.3 from the dropdown top left in mapsource when it opened maybe with a bit of luck you can do the same.

No thats not it I am showing 2011.1 in the top left - I think that Wapping had it right - it seems that when I have a route that was drawn in the previous mapset the Zumo is incapable of realising that the maps have been updated and just views the waypoints as though there are no roads connecting them - it therefore draws straight lines between them that roughly equates to the roads in the new mapset. To fix I had to copy into Mapsource; recalculate; delete the origfinal on the Zumo then send the newly re-calculated route back to the Zumo and presto it works. Not sure why when I re-calculate the original on the Zumo it doesn't replicate what happens in mapsource which would surely make a lot more sense. Like I said more of an inconvenience than anything else.

Naturally assuming that you have the same mapping on both your Zumo and your PC; You might have your routing preferences set-up differently on the GPS. Also I'm not sure if the Zumo, having less processing grunt than your PC, runs as deep an algorithm as in Mapsource. Would make sense if it did mind you.

I would give Garmin a call as the mapping on mapsource and you zumo should be the same after the update.
