how can i learn about xp so that i make use of everything it does? it seems very different to me or 98 which is what i am use to. also why do i have to turn the pc off at the power switch every time?

Do I assume you pc also fires up on its own as mine does ?
Mine has done this since new. Thought it was me at first, but now realise it just kicks up in the middle of the night. I have had a hunt around the settings but never found anything that might be causing this to happen. I have XP Home Edition.

Take a look in the hardware setup (press Del - or F2 / F10 maybe - on the startup screen). There usually are options like "wake on LAN" or "wake on modem" that can make your pc boot when there is a signal on the network port or modem port.
If any of those are set to "ON", that may be causing your problem.

Check under Settings / Control Panel / Power options. Maybe some setting there keeps it from switching off automatically.

Cheers,

there is an option there for "enable advanced power options" or similar (can't find it on mine, so difficult to be exact). check that & your pc will shut down properly.
for some reason this is not always enabled by default. depends on hardware config perhaps?

there is a lso a handy option on one of those tabs for pc to do a software shutdown, if you juts press the power button.

ps. xp is not so very different from 98. just persevere & you'll soon get the hang of it. you can even make it look like 98 if you choose "classic style" in right click desktop>properties>display properties>appearance>windows & buttons ;)

Windows XP is very good. When you look at what it can do its not surprising that bill got done in the european courts.

Zip, Cd Burning etc all possible just with windows.

And plug and play that almost is plug and play rather than plug and pray. (Still worth reading the getting started when you buy a new peripheral)

I think that Windows XP with offcie XP or Office 2000 does what most people need. Windwos 2000 is also very good.

possible, but not very good at all. obtain a proper burning prog like nero or easy cd.

overall xp is very good though. MAJOR increase in reliability over 98 & ME especially.

Cookie, for your average Bod it's good enough and thats the point. I burn a CD a month so I don't need Nero. The point also being that all these smaller companies risk going out of business coz of Bill Gates.

Been running 98 since, well, er '00 really following the crappy ME release/demise and found it ok.

Only last week did I get around to XP and had XP Pro installed.

Still finding my way around it - much easier for us Yorksha puddings to navigate
:D

98 or millenium to XP was the biggest and best change so far without doubt IMO......

There are lots of 'XP for dummies' type books out there that are probably quite good (not looked at one tbh but the series is good on other things)

Otherwise, post your q's here....there's always someone who'll have a good idea of the answer.

The other thing that's easier to do it mess around with your set-up.....but do a files and settings save first, then set a return point.......as long as you don't do something serious enough to stop windows booting in the first place, you can always go back to that point with just a few clicks....sort of a 'get out of jail free' card.....

:D

i must admit, my knowledge of xp's burning capabilities are second hand, as i was already using nero when i moved to xp. nero is the best i believe, but rather difficult to learn. easy cd easier, but not as comprehensive. not in the versions i've used anyway.

one of my less techy mates had all sorts of probs with getting it to do what he wanted. i understand it has real problems organising files into folders & leaves duplicates all over the place. that's what i heard from him & others anyhow.

actually, for burning audio cd's, i've recently been using winamp pro. very easy & quick plus a better player than windows media player too.

how did i get sidetracked into this burning issue

didn't mean to hijack. sorry.

just to clarify. this option is under control panel>power options.

it will fix your power off problems, or i'm a dutchman....and we already have one of those :D

nero 6 is the best its soooo simple. there r mags in whsmith that explain all about xp there about 5pounds each:teacher
