Looking at my 94 R80 cafe project today and thought that might make a better GS style special (or a track bike, or a cafe racer............)

My initial thoughts are:

Trail bike front end or just forks with disc brake (maybe XR650 or the like).
21 inch front wheel
Spoked rear wheel -what will fit from the BM family?
Guards, bars, seat, pegs etc
Enduro tank
Jacked up rear end with R100GSPD shock
A bit of weight reduction (the bike, not me :D although......)

Has anyone been down this path?

If so what bits fit/work?

The aim is to muck around with an airhead without incurring huge costs. Restoring/renovating my other airheads has spending priority.

Is it best to pick up a dead trailie to use for parts or to pick up specific bits known to work?

Cos the bike owes me little can cut, shut or modify to my hearts content :eek

Any input gratefully received :thumb2

There is a long thread on this on the Adventure riders old school forum= cont remember the exact title but I think it was a ST converted to a GS.

Does anyone know what off road forks or front end are easily fitted or adapted to an R80/7?
Have seen references to Honda front ends being easily fitted but can't find specific refences.

Searches for 39mm forks only bring up Harley references.:eek

Found a good thread on here last night but now search only wants to find posts by me (boring)-not sure what's happening there

Any hints would be welcome and save me hours of non productive Googling :blast

Will advertise locally for a wreck if I know what I am looking for.

thanks :thumb

Rob`s already shown you my XTZ mod to my LegoBike. (43mm forks)

Prior to that I had a DTR 125 front end on it (41mm forks)

You can fit anything to anything else.

The only deciding factors are money, time and skill.

You can worry yourself out of doing anything and also ask too many questions.

If you`ve got an idea, the inspiration,or the parts, just do it.

If it works out less than ideal either tweak it until it`s right or go back to where you were.

Thanks Tarka.

My aim is to do the research to identify bits that fit or are easily adapted. I don't want this blow out into a exxy project that never ends and consumes cash that should go into restoring my GSs.

Seeing what you and others have done is good info.

I'm thinking if I could buy a wreck with an "easy fit" front end then I would also have the bars, pegs, guards, lights etc rather than having to buy these separately.

The rear wheel seems to be the tricky bit if I want to go to spokes -I'm wondering whether my R100GSPD wheel will fit? Will try it when I get time. Another option is to keep the cast wheels and go motard

I've deviated from the cafe racer concept because tha majority of my BMs are GSs and an off road special would fit in nicely. Whilst typing this I was thinking of other bikes in the shed and in a moment of insanity thought - K1 off roader -

No I didn't think so.............!! :D

If it eventuates I will post pics and be happy to receive comments/advice.

Alibaba,

thanks for the pictures. That k75 looks amazing and is really well executed. Is it heavy?

A friend of mine build the bike a few years ago.
Mainly because he bought a cheep K75 and he wanted to build a special bike.

He wanted to switch to 18' and 21' wheels but the bike got sold to finance another project. Other plans involved making of a catchtank with fuel-pump to gain a bit better range. The tank is extended, it was a major job.

I can't remember the weight, but it was not bad. I would guess lighter then a PD but heavier then a Basic.
It was running great but as pastyman says 21' would have been far better.
